Taxi service is meant for people waiting at the taxi-stand , very bad service if taxi are to pick customers on street , if taxi stand is full of people waiting ....

Taxi stand also not guarantee that taxi will be there.
I pass by Funan IT Mall just now, queue is there, but, no taxi.
I think eventually the taxi company will open the trade to PRCs and we will have taxis everywhere.
Taxi company only take care of their profits.
As long as the take-up rate is satisfied, the PRCs taxi drivers are the eventual trend.
By then, we will see a wind of change. -
wow... not another discussion about foreign taxi drivers please.... almost any job in singapore can be opened to foreigners if we want to bring price down and increase supply... including your job or the government...
at the end of the day, we are living in a country and not a money making place. A country need jobs to feed its own people who are born here, who defend and stay here... -

FT replacement for taxi driver cannot be prevented.
The businessmen are more worried about feeding their own people (themselves and the shareholders) than to be bothered about the well being of the drivers.
Their complaint now is that the take-up rate for the car is low.
As long as the Cheng Hu are money minded, there is nothing to prevent this from happening as they dun want the "companies" to close shop. (As what the old man is only concerned when they raised the bus fares)
End of the day, it is the business that counts.
They will not stick their neck out to protect local drivers.
In the end, the local guys will be "blamed" for not being "hungrier".

THE Land Transport Authority has released the locations of 15 new taxi stands in the Central Business District (CBD).
The move comes ahead of new safety rules, which debut in March, that say passengers can flag a cab only from a taxi stand.
The new stands, in addition to the 80 existing ones, will be within 300m, or a five-minute walk, of most buildings in the CBD, said the transport authority.
Taxi stands are scheduled to be installed along the following roads by the end of this month:
Amoy Street
Armenian Street
Clemenceau Avenue
Robinson Road
Kreta Ayer Road
Neil Road
Old Parliament Lane
Peck Seah Street
Penang Road
Purvis Street
Sago Lane
Short Street
Stamford Road
Tan Tye Place
Waterloo Street

At least in overseas, the drivers know how every part of the city unlike some of the Singapore drivers here, You tell them how to get another end of Singapore, some of them will be like lost chickens. I think it's neccesary for these drivers to know the map of Singapore well , it's not like as if Singapore is that BIG.

15 taxi stands added in CBD as cab hailing prohibited from next March
SINGAPORE : It would soon be easier to get a taxi within the Central Business District (CBD).
Taxi commuters in the area will only need to take a five—minute walk from their office buildings to get to a taxi stand.
This is because the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is adding 15 more taxi stands in the area by the end of this month. This is in addition to the existing 80 stands. So, there will be a taxi stand within 300 metres from each other.
LTA has added more stands because it is prohibiting the hailing of cabs in the area from March 2008. — CNA /ls -

Marsiling no taxis ? Funny .... Marsiling area sure got taxi one leh , morning peak hour , is it ?

If you want good service..that will cost.
Can we expect good service if we pay so little.
And if you can't afford the increase...then there are the buses for the poor folk.
London cab driver are very famous for good service.
It is extremely difficult to get a licence. For the test you need to memorise 400 routes and bring the tester on a bike.
BUT
They earn 3x more and drive half the time as much as singapore driver(Check BBC online).
Are singaporeans willing to pay for that kind of service?
London cab driver can take their time with each passenger, more than opening doors and load/unload luggage.
Singapore cab drivers have to rush for the next passenger, their meals and have much less time with their families compared to their London counterpart.
What matters is not how much the fare is increase but how much the driver is earning. fares need to be more flexible.
1] flag down fare increase will depend on rental payment increase.
2]surcharge during peak period will cover cost, so taxi will go to areas that have traffic jam(CBD), meaning longer time per passenger, meaning less number of passenger. The worst the jam, the higher the surcharge, otherwise the taxis won't enter. they can earn more in the less crowded housing estates.
3]And how fast the meter increase should depend on the cost of fuel. diesel price increase and/or decrease in diesel subsidies will translate into faster meter increase.
4]ERP...taxis are public transport...shouldn't be charged or at most be charged a fix subsidies rate through the taxi companies.
As you can see the increase will mostly cover cost. The taxi driver's earning should only increase slightly to take into account cost of living. -
aiya, until the correct group of people get to set the taxi fares, we can talk until tomor about the taxi fare structure but nothing will be done... At this moment taxi companies are setting the taxi fares. Think about this - What do you think your h/p usage charges will be if nokia set your monthly plan charges instead of Singtel? It is sure to be artificially low, so that more will own h/p... and Nokia will reap huge profit and M1 will suffer... in the taxi case, it is worse, cos it involves many drivers have been driving for a long time and they are not trained to switch line easily...

ComfortDelGro overhauls taxi fare structure

SINGAPORE: ComfortDelGro, the largest operator of taxis in Singapore, has overhauled its fare structure which it says will better meet the demand for and supply of taxi services at different times of the day.
The changes will kick in next Monday.
Flagging down a Comfort or CityCab will cost $0.30 more at $2.80.
The metered fare has also been adjusted.
It will cost $0.20 per 385 metres of travel for the first 10 kilometres.
This will go up to $0.20 per 330 metres for journeys beyond 10 kilometres.
It will cost $0.20 for every 45 seconds of waiting time.
Instead of the $2 surcharge for peak hour travel, there will now be a premium levied.
It will be 35 per cent of the metered fare.
And the CBD surcharge will go up by $2 to $3.
For travel from midnight till just before 6am, instead of the gradual buildup in surcharge, it will be simplified to a flat 50 per cent on the metered fare.
However, the booking fee during peak hours will be reduced by $0.50 to $3.50.
The booking fee remains at $2.50 for non-peak hours.
As an example, ComfortDelGro says a 9 kilometre trip off-peak will cost $8.40 note: that's a 12% hike during off-peak hours while a trip of the same distance during peak hours will cost $14.35. note: that's a 51% hike during peak hours
This is comparable to what the same trip would cost in Hong Kong and still only half of what it would cost in Sydney.
In a news release, ComfortDelGro says the fare changes are the result of an in depth review of the industry by the Group, which took into account suggestions and feedback from the public.
The changes also took into account feedback from taxi associations, taking into consideration the higher operating costs of taxis.
Also, it addressed commuters' concern on the difficulty in getting a cab in the city in the evening while encouraging call bookings to better match the demand and supply of taxis.
The Taxi Operators Associations or TOA, in its response, called the fare revision fair and timely.
This is in view of the rapidly rising operating cost, especially the price of diesel and the increase in the Goods and Services Tax.
It believes that overall taxi metre fare should reflect the operating cost of the taxi business, and the primary consideration is the income stability of the taxi drivers when fare adjustments are made.

Or else increasing the taxi fares will be serving no purpose.
From the table increase chart, I foresee the MIA of taxi from 6 am to 7 am, 4 pm to 5 pm and 11 pm to midnight.
The old problem will resurface again.

aiyo, should have been like that years ago..... now is time for commuters to kao peh for 2 weeks, then demand will be back to normal..... I think this adjustment is good for both drivers and commuters. Even better for non comfort drivers. But comfort company will lose out in terms of much less booking liao... me drive comfort also will not wait for booking in town liao...
