. Some "advance" fisherman already start using "night-vision" so I think it will suit your purpose also. Infra-red torches combine with some good night-vision capable video-cam should help also... (go find out from "ClubSNAP" for details LOL) -

The 3-Watt Luxeon is not only just much much brighter (70-lumens) than your 9-LED 3AAA (approx. 15-lumens), it also can give a further "beam throw" (i.e. u can see further)

Frankly speaking if u want brightness, torches with high-pressure Xenon-Bulb built-in will be superb, but run-time will be shorter (powered by 2xCR123A)
What I have now for the Xenon-torch is in the hundred-plus lumens range, Lithium or Rechargeables form also have...
Call me if u are keen to get high-power torches
