my recommendation for you is the motorola talkabout 5000 series. you can find cheap deals in sim lim square. price is around $100~120 for a pair with a twin charger plus two pack of nicad batteries. if you use walkies frequently, buy extra nicad batteries. one pack cost ard $10. my advice is: buy everything in a single package, you'll need everything and it's cheaper overall. for cheap handsfree, you can try the shops at lv1 and try to bargain for $10 each, it's possible. handsfree (not VOX, which can cost up to $60 each) are highly recommeded. becuz it works like a normal hp's handsfree, you can tuck your radio into your pocket and communicate without holding a radio in your face, which can look quite stupid if your near crowds like shopping centres etc. furthermore, the loud noise emitted also turns heads. with handsfree, you will totally feel like a spy or undercover, whatever.
the 5000 series provides you a mileage of 5 miles, equivelant to approximately 8km. note that the range applies only if there're no direct obstructions between radios like concrete walls, trees, buildings, etc. if 8km range is not enuf for you, go for the 7000 series which crank up to 7 miles of distance. these radios are quite large and ugly. regarding the license fee for these radios, please contact the dealers for more details.

i have a T5000 wired up to a fire fox throat mic ...but the volume is still too soft even if i have turned it all the way up (using it while riding on a motorcycle)...any way to crank up the volume ?

think in order to get subscription for the radio type, u need to be a registered organisation or company first and carry a licence of $200 per set of walkie talkies.. those FRS type, no need licence... The only islandwide walkie talkie service provide is at www.grid.net.sg. Only one shop on SimLim is the dealer Feedback Comm @ #02-70. Non of those sold in SimLim are island-wide, they probably carries over upto 8km the most. My company uses the islandwide talkies for our despatch drivers, also has gsm phone functions and SMS, now with java and GPS for tracking as well ...go take a look at the website.

maybe i reply this too late but anyway here goes...
u need a repeater if u want to use it for island wide. for that u need to register it and they will assign a frequency range for it. but the yearly fees is about 1k.
for normal walkie talkie( the approve tye) u can get as cheap as $50 (shiro) per PAIR and expensive like $120 (motorola) per UNIT.
so far the approve type in singapore is quite a few
shiro (abt $50-$60) (i use this one)
motorola (abt $90-$120 per unit)
hyt(abt $180)
there are few more walkie talkie such as the watch type($75 per unit)
sorry cant give u full detail but u can check IDA website for approve 446 pmr;p -

those so call claim as 8 km please bear in mind that is the range when u are in lthe range of sight for example open field....for using in the hdb estate it can drop as much to 1km! shiro brand is the worst! i can only get less than 500m around hdb block but that walkie talkie serve me well when i'm in a shopping center;p -
for goodness sake, please get motorola ones... Shiro types are like child play !
