digital cameras are pretty cheap these days and anything around 5MP will get you damned good pictures for print up to about A4 size or more...
read up in dpreview about the types..
a few practical things for normal pic taking.. look at how much batteries and what type they use... AA or AAA batteries will put a hole in your pocket as most digicams are pretty high drain
but the batteries which are made for the camera is expensive so there is a balance which you must find if you want to take a lot of pictures...
media is pretty cheap these days so you can forget about these things.. most use sd or xd and CF.. Sony ones ALL use their memory sticks which are more expensive...
just go walk around and have a hands-on with them..
the main brands all have pretty much the same performance these days with 3x to 5x zoom and macro..
for really small compacts, go with the new sony or casio ones... they're very small..
entry level Film Cameras are cheaper (cost $200 and below).
but buy and develope films can kill.. ($13 per 30 photos++).. take soe images like fireworks no good
entry level Digi Cameras cost about $250-$400
instant view images, capture images better, esp at night
i heard the police still uses film ones
If you're looking for Entry Level ones, it can be as low as $199.

Me have a Nikon F50 and a D50... Both have their advantages and disadvantages...
End of the day, it will bode down to your habit and scope of use...
If you ask me, scenic and artistic scope me would use my F50...
For events and outings where quick review needed, me use D50...
