  Looking for second hand bicycle. Budget around 40. Negotiable.
  Preferably staying in the east for easy passing of the bicycle.

  I suggest you to go to the shop to get the bike. You are getting the bike for transport ? Maybe The kind of market bicycle they will sell at $40 second hand. You could try if you want. But i don't think anyone will sell their bike for $40.

  with a budget of 500 - 650, u can get a 2nd GT bike for that. I went to Tay Junction over the weekend @ bt timah, saw a GT avalanche brand new @ $599 with mechanical disc brakes

  u can always change the seat, sometime its not about how big the seat cushion is but a matter of toning ur butt.....initially will be very sore if haven't been cycling for some time.
  
  next is, they can find u the right size if ur getting a new bike
  
  yes, MTB can be relatively expensive depending on what brand, parts ur getting.

  since this is just starting, i wun go for parts..just a stock model with comfy seating will do.. nearing the triathlon, i will go for a really good one like Trek or Cannondale

  err, triathlon...u won't be cycling MTB..u'll be using road bike & cannondale/trek are not that fantastic when it comes to roaddies
  
  go check out the $599 GT bike @ Tay, fyi....i'm using a specialised s-works
  
  left at home collect dust for almost a year already

  Maybe you can try getting a hybrid? you can always change the wheels to go wither on road or off road. Trek also have hybrids you might consider getting one.
