{GP notes from HCI}
- A Question of Balance (HCI)
direct quote: "one of the most repeated requests from Cambridge Examiners is that GP candidates provide balance in their essays, (...) This booklet attempts to restore some sanity to the situation by explaining exactly what is meant by the term "a balanced essay" and providing some sound advice on how to successfully write one"
- Singapore's Founding Fathers (HCI)
A booklet containing the profiles of Singapore's founding fathers, with useful quotes with regards to events from the past (e.g. Japanese Occupation), present (e.g. Rajaratnam's take on culture and moneytheism and a guide to AQ in the local context (with suggested attempt)
- Word Power: For the sake of argument (HCI)
The whole book talks about one thing: types of vocabulary. From phrases to use to oppose/agree to connectives and examples of weak arguments and their opposite: impressive styles.
= Issues and Ideas (HCI) sold
Themes: Conflict/Violence, Politics, Education, Human Rights
Somewhat a form of 'readings', except it doesn't provide full texts. instead, it's re-written in a discussion manner to highlight the values/ideas of issues.
- From Fact to Fiction (HCI)
A more literary approach to issues. It's focused more on the language aspect of GP, esp Paper 2 compre and AQ... with the different writing styles/tones of the passages...and to help give "life" to a theme.
quote: "the guiding questions accompanying each text will hone your sensitivity in detecting useful language techniques (...) answering the comprehension questions, it will help in your evaluation of tone in the AQ."
- Time Tunnel (HCI)
Fact to Fiction is more language and literature, TT is more on historical developments for making sense of the present and future through understanding the past. Good for AQ and to say bye to cultural ignorance.
- Politics and Power Booklet
A lot of practice on theme-related vocab, articles on key ideas (e.g.Totalitarianism, Elections)
**Recommended if you plan to do such essays; might be challenging, but easy to get A once you've gotten the "main idea of things"
- War and Peace Booklet
different theme, same as above.
- Science and Tech Booklet
- Education Booklet
- General paper "Makeover" package (NJC)
Highlights language errors, common incorrect use of punctuation marks, comes with a lot of practice on sentence error, answers provided.
