Over the past 30 years, archeologists have restored dozens of Moai, big austere statues that watch over Easter Island. Even the haunting eyes of the Moai, made of white and obsidian corals, have regained their place. They remain a powerful symbol for the islanders, who believe that their gaze can transform Moai into living creatures. Picture shows restored (back) and unrestored Moai(AFP/File/Martin Bernetti)
