A huge rescue operation involving helicopters and lifeboats was mounted to take people to safety. The scale of the devastation - streets turned into rivers, uprooted trees and walls demolished - is difficult to imagine in today's peaceful scene. -

An enduring image from the flood were the cars being swept away by the water. One resident described how they "watched the cars come down like a duck race, bobbing along". Some ended up past the mouth of the river on the sea bed, and are now a diving attraction.
