This combo shows a house in a flooded area of New Orleans 10 September (L) and the same house on 13 September 2005 (R). Flood waters receded swiftly in storm-stricken New Orleans, revealing a shattered landscape of ruined homes, wrecked cars and a thick foul-smelling sludge. In the Mid-City district, waters were at least 1.3 metres (four feet) lower than two days earlier and many once-swamped streets have drained entirely. With more pumps brought in to help the clear the flood waters, army engineers have said the water could be cleared much faster than at first predicted.(AFP/Omar Torres)
