Medical care in the earthquake zone
Two weeks after the South Asia earthquake struck, UK-based medical aid charity Merlin, moved into a remote valley on the border of Pakistani-administered Kashmir.
This is the story of how Merlin set up a field hospital in the valley, where it is set to spend the winter. -
Dr Sean Keogh conducted a preparatory assessment of the area for Merlin.
The region had been cut off from road by mudslides and was accessible only by helicopter. Some villages had literally slid off the mountain.
All of the regionÂ’s health facilities, itsÂ’ infrastructure and most of the buildings had been destroyed. -
When Dr Keogh arrived, people had been without medical attention for two weeks.
On return from his three-day trek, he reported the "desperate" medical need: "We saw rows of people with suppurating wounds. Young people, old people, everyone; the smell of gangrene hung in the air."
He warned: "If help doesnÂ’t get there soon, there will be infections, amputations and even deaths." -
MerlinÂ’s first task was to evacuate the most seriously wounded to hospital in Islamabad.
Five-year old Saheed – who had escaped from the wreckage of his house when the earthquake struck – was one of the first.
He was listless and in pain, his left ear had been torn and a crush wound on his head was badly infected.
Here he waits evacuation at the makeshift helipad with his father.
