Depends on how old your kids are, I guess? Though patience, understanding and... consistent discipline helps.
Relief taught 13 yr olds for a few months... and I found that with teenagers, respecting their pride lets them... respect you more. Never shout at them or judge them, just listen to them, and if u scold them, make sure u explain what they did wrong. I guess reason being these are kids who are impatient to be treated like adults?
Currently working with a bunch of 8 yr olds.... very different ba. I find with younger kids - cultivating HABITS and appropriate punishment helps.
Eg. Keeping quiet and seated in class. I explained the need to keep quiet then trained them to recognise tt when I raise hand to the air, I will give them up to the count of 5 to keep silent and return to their seats. Explain that when they waste your time when you should be doing your work, it is fair that they return some of THEIR time to you. So when its play time, I will ask them how many turns of my 1 min hourglass should they remain totally silent and in their seats.
It's quite funny how honest they are! I have had naughty kids sheepishly telling me they should be punished for 11 turns because they talk so much in class.
By all means, be strict, be fierce - just keep showing them u love them as well!
