hmm...but if this kind of technology is made available to the public so easily, it will be more tempting for the users to download music/videos and therefore violate the copyright law rite?Originally posted by SnowFlag:It is the user, not the technology itself
Technology can be put to good use and also be misused by others.Originally posted by rainee:hmm...but if this kind of technology is made available to the public so easily, it will be more tempting for the users to download music/videos and therefore violate the copyright law rite?
hmm..ok, makes senseOriginally posted by SnowFlag:Technology can be put to good use and also be misused by others.
Just like a kitchen knife, you can use it correctly for cutting the vegetables, or use it incorrectly to kill.
It was started by Tom petty, all the whole mp3 hoopla that is. I love his songs especially freefalling. It was when he felt that his record company priced his cd too high, so he put out his music online for fans to download and that's how we have mp3 nowOriginally posted by The Emperor:It's more of the user than the technology.
the question is... who started all these "illegal" download softwares? someone who wanted the sharing of music/files to be convenient among friends or any stranger that has that file.
there is also another group of people that spoils the market. basically, these are the kinds who will abuse this peer sharing program to sell illegal copies of the files they've "stolen".
so, in conclusion, i feel that peer sharing programs are to be used properly, for one's consumsion and ownership, and not to be abused by making illegal copies of what isn't yours.
if we are sharing songs, movies etc in a community, like forums for example, isn't it the same? nowadays, people don't need programs like those u mentioned to share files.. there are so many other ways some even better, more efficient than those, so, holding them responsible doesn't solve any problem. there is really no use hunting them down coz u kill one, another one comes out.Originally posted by rainee:Do you think Peer2Peer sharing companies such as Kazaa, Grokster, Streamcast and Morpheus should be held liable for copyright infringement? Or is it more of the users fault to share music?
Need some sincere opinion here, it is for my writing and research class
unfortunately, this isn really what they have in mindOriginally posted by dibilo:if we are sharing songs, movies etc in a community, like forums for example, isn't it the same? nowadays, people don't need programs like those u mentioned to share files.. there are so many other ways some even better, more efficient than those, so, holding them responsible doesn't solve any problem. there is really no use hunting them down coz u kill one, another one comes out.
sidetrack a little, online media as we know it is the way to go, so music/movie companies should work with those p2p companies and find a win win alternative. for eg, paying a monthly subscription for using the p2p program and the p2p companies can pay a certain %age of it to the music/movie companies. this way, people can download without guilt or fear of getting caught, p2p companies can still earn money and music and movie companies can have another source of income through the huge user network of p2p.
