What you are suffering from is technically called Globus Pharyngus.. The sensation comes with stress and tension from work and you will feel that there is this lump or some ppl may describe it as a tightness around the neck and finds it hard... it is as though one is being smothered to death...
Breathing then becomes uncomfortable and so is appetite at times... Most ppl affected have Type A personality, meaning that they are panicky, easily irritated and wants to get things done in the fastest and their own way... They are usually ppl who are easily agitated and cannot relax easily...
You have to learn how to relax yourself and up to a point even towards changing your personality...
I shall refer you to alfagal, my liaison psychologist for further consultation...

Suggestions:
again, you would have to take note of ur body tell tale signs, e.g if the pain and tightness is creeping in, feeling stressed up, frustrated or easily irritated. pls put down ur work and relax..
Relaxation training:
Muscles: u know how sometimes u do tis gesture of shruging ur shoulders when u trying to say: i dont know? jus make this action exaggerating (u can squint your face too!! haha make sure no one looking la...)and make ur shoulders go all e way up till it touches your neck, then really squeeze ur muscles in tat area maybe for bout 10-15secs then let go (RELAX!!)...do it 3-5 times..you shld feel more relaxed after that.
If you are really a type A person then do take note tat these pple are usually related to hypertention
most pple nowadays (inc me) dunno how to relax when they should! haha
Breathing: take deep breath and count to ten while breathing out...do this 10-15times..
Imaging: jus close ur eyes and imagine urself in a perfectly relaxing place, e.g where you would like to go this weekend, or think of ur favourite foods, wat u like to do, wat makes u happy (basically day-dreaming) dun get caught by ur boss! n it takes practice to master it, cos you need to concentrate on ur thoughts, and not to be distracted by ur noisy surroundings.
Get out: leave your work station. visit the loo, go to the pantry have drink etc...
Lifestyle: exercise! but not near your sleeping time (or e adrenaline will stop ur from zzz well). best times to exercise is the end of the day where or muscles are more stretched (from all days work). before or 1-2hrs after ur dinner...
eat healthy..more fruits! n veges...
Bedroom: if it helps, can sleep w aromatherapy, eg. using lavender oil, have some chamomile tea. these essential oils n plant derivatives have been reowned for its sedative (mild) effects.
make sure tat ur room is sufficently dark. bedroom is meant for sleeping, pls dun do ur work on the bed...if u have t v in ur room, then switch it off. do not think bout any work related stuff w ur eyes closed =p (sounds dumb but not easy to do...)
well ventilated room if ur room is not air-conditioned..(actually, its recommend to sleep in air-conditioned rooms...)
Dear all stressed ups:
Stress leads to release of cortisols in ur body. it can serve as a adrenaline in e short run to keep u going, esp during exam periods and late nights.
however, in e long run, it will give rise to chronic diseases (tatz y stress is a major health threat: silent killer) as it weakens ur immune system. therefore the signs of muscles tensions, headaches, coughs and flu etc...
FYI

how would i know if I inherit any of her conditions?Originally posted by renorenal:Steroid in fact helps in the maturity of the lungs during pregnancy, and has become a treatment for people undergoing premature labor before 34 weeks of pregnancy. Eczema and Asthma has a higher chance of being passed on, and that's why we often query anyone else in the family who are suffering from the similar condition.

Cats
Cockroaches
Infection

As for sinusitis, there are both acute and chronic condition, depending on the duration your mother has been suffering from... The curative method is sinus drainage which is purely surgical and can be performed by an ENT surgeon...
Sinusitis is a condition whereby the drainage system from the sinus (empty air-box which contains cells that produces mucus) gets blocked and the mucus accumulates leading to an increase in facial and nasal tension. There may also be a constant chronic headache which can be at times very troublesome.

to me, its not really a condition cos it causes no harm, but i jus happen to have e readings for it (outside my syllybus). psychology is considered a social science, so it does involves science lo..biology is needed to provide us w background info before we can understand n come up w explanations (neuroscientific view is jus one of them).Originally posted by Othello_Red:strange that you're learning it as a psychological condition. but i guess that's the way this condition is treated for the time being. i'm reading about it from the cognitive neuroscience view. medically, people with this condition have been dismissed as attention seeking or having psychological disorders or just plain crazy. however, for the neuroscience view, there does seem to be proof that it is a physiological condition. for one, it is a familial and not too rare (occurs in 1 out of 200) and the strange thing is that it occurs 7 times more often in artistically inclined people.
now that to me is very interesting...and since there are some artistically inclined people here...i wonder...do you guys actually have that mixed senses thing? or even see color when you're looking at days, months and the like?
When you develop the symptoms... it would be impractical to do a DNA profiling and match with hers to see whether it is theoretically inherited even though the human genome project is nearly 90% mapped...Originally posted by LinYu:how would i know if I inherit any of her conditions?
