just like now, one wonders about the Geisha tradition... within it, is a messed up tradition where a woman is trained in the arts of dance, music and all that... before she can go, she has to leave her family, "get adopted by another", get accepted by a teahouse, find a patron who pays for her everything (and she is effectively his "concubine" ) and a lot of other things...
her real parents seem heartbroken
she herself doesn't seem very happy about it too..
strange world isn't it?

a dude in advertising once told me that it's a very messed up society there...
when the Japanese in Japan will not accept as a "Japanese" someone who is not schooled in Japan.. that is, even when the Japanese child goes to a Japanese school outside of Japan (even if all the teachers in there are Japanese)
the child will be ostracised when they go back to Japan...
