im confident. no problem. i can handle different accents comfortablyOriginally posted by mystiv:hmm, how many of you are actually confident of code-switching?
err...i can easily switch from singlish to english...Originally posted by mystiv:hmm, how many of you are actually confident of code-switching when the need arises?
i don't think you should use singlish when communicating with the english people..........they look at you with the same revolting look.......that scornful look........yucks.......esp the older and more conservative english people........Originally posted by mystiv:what i'm baffled by is some people's insistence on standard English 24/7, and also some people's refusal to switch away from Singlish when the need arises
hmm. do you guys feel that as long as communication is clear, it doesnt matter what garbled language is used, or do you guys insist on the language being used in the proper way?
as long as i can understand the person without asking them to repeat themselves too many times, im ok with it.Originally posted by mystiv:what i'm baffled by is some people's insistence on standard English 24/7, and also some people's refusal to switch away from Singlish when the need arises

to be honest i prefer standard english over singlish. singlish is just really harsh and grating on the ears. just because i can speak and understand it doesn't mean i have to like it.Originally posted by mystiv:what i'm baffled by is some people's insistence on standard English 24/7, and also some people's refusal to switch away from Singlish when the need arises

that's under "when the need arises"Originally posted by gohkatkat:i don't think you should use singlish when communicating with the english people..........they look at you with the same revolting look.......that scornful look........yucks.......esp the older and more conservative english people........
now i like your comparisonOriginally posted by HENG@:to be honest i prefer standard english over singlish. singlish is just really harsh and grating on the ears. just because i can speak and understand it doesn't mean i have to like it.
even if communication is clear, it still matters because a language as butchered as singlish is just not pleasant. its like having to choose between a neatly typed letter and a large piece of wall with the words spelled out in shit. so u can read both and communication is clear, but so what? u'd prefer the letter anytime
thats what singlish is to meOriginally posted by mystiv:now i like your comparison

its definately NOT our national language. Its quite a disgrace, because it projects the image that we're all stupid people who cannot pick up a simple language easily. The rest might like beeing seen as idiots. but I'm not. I have no wish to be seen as part of the rest of the rabbleOriginally posted by mystiv:
alright. another thing. do you guys actually reckon that Singlish is something to be proud of, being our...'national', 'invented' language, or simply feel that Singlish is a downright disgrace to Singaporeans?
err...i dont think its anything to be PROUD of...but neither is it a disgrace.Originally posted by mystiv:

singlish is more than an accent. it has loads of malay, dialect, chinese and even tamil mixed in. its a bastardization of many languages, so i don't think its as acceptable as say, a cockney accentOriginally posted by udontknowme:err...i dont think its anything to be PROUD of...but neither is it a disgrace.
its just english with a singaporean accent to me...
just like english with an american/british/whatever-place accent...
