can it? is it? speak more it will become a 2nd nature. singlish also has a certain structure of speaking, or else it's just not singlish. How come singaporeans are so well versed in singlish? because they speak it all the time. if they spent 30% of the time they spent on singlish on english instead, i bet their english would improve by leaps and bounds. And how come there are loads of us who can sue both fluently? Its really no excuse.Originally posted by mystiv:that depends, really. sometimes the grammar and everything can just be such an headache
guess that's the main reason why Singlish is so popular. i mean, its much easier to just anyhow say, anyhow type
i have to admit, i am part of the Singaporeans who speak mainly Singlish. Well, when the need arises, i do try to stick to standard English, but sometimes, i stumble over what i want to say, trying to keep singlish out
The way we use language and the time we spend with it? I'm not sure, but for me, definitely. Before starting primary school, I never touched English before. Have a lot of those Smarty (Bookworm gang) books before I was P1, but never read them because I never know how to, and neither do my parents. I was struggling with English when I was P1, and it took me a while before I was comfortable with it.Originally posted by HENG@:how can it be harder than say, written chinese? only 26 letters to memorize, and u can guess the spelling of words from the way they r pronounced. ok granted my spelling sucks anyway but hey, still much easier to learn compared to loads other languages.
Well, with languages, more is always an asset. Personally, i think people who don't grow comfortable with it, are losing out and doing themselves a disfavour.Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:The way we use language and the time we spend with it? Singapore Standard English, SSE or other related acroynms, is our grammatically correct English spoken with our local accent.
