  i had this very pragmatic approach then..
  
  i go to poly, i learn skills and get a diploma.. and if i'm good enough, i get to go to uni with a year's exemption...
  
  i go to JC, i learn... subjects which i'll probably forget and no skill.. i get A-levels.. which is inferior to a diploma.. and if i'm good enough, i get to go through uni.. without exemptions...
  
  however, my folks are not very enlightened..

  heh me too... I wanted to go to a poly, but I didn't know what I wanted to study! So I went to a JC, hoping that I'd find what I really wanted while spending 2 years doing something productive. Then I came out of JC, still clueless, ended up with a gap year working before finally landing where I am now.

  Ah but really, the distance you have to travel, the hour of sleep you have to sacrifice, they're worth it for a junior college with a environment that nurtures your character and gives you lots of exposure. Do crash alot of colleges in your first three months and pick one you think is best, not nearest.
