hmm...i dunno...teaching in a classroom has its fun and advantages, teaching personal student oso has its own advantages...Originally posted by fudgester:Well, here are the normal market rates in SG:
Primary: $15-$20/hour.
Secondary: $20-$30/hour.
JC: $25- $35/hour.
The pay does seem enticing, but that's assuming that you can get enough tuition students. I've heard of a friend who has a friend who's a Masters grad. He works every day as a full-time private tutor and really makes a real lot of money.
As for me, I'm perfectly content with just teaching my younger cousins for my pocket money. I would love to take on one more assignment, though it's pretty hard for guys to get assignments when so many parents want female tutors.![]()
Nope. It's pretty informal. I get paid in cash.Originally posted by rainee:hmm...i dunno...teaching in a classroom has its fun and advantages, teaching personal student oso has its own advantages...
to become a full time personal tutor do u need any teaching permit?
yea trueOriginally posted by fudgester:Nope. It's pretty informal. I get paid in cash.
As you can see, this leaves the system open to abuse.... there are too many unscrupulous private tutors out there who can't study to save their own lives, let alone teach.![]()
How about cross-dressing?Originally posted by hisoka:dam i wanted tuition but its too far and i'm not female.
well for that i might consider for a pretty jc girl but for primary school no thx.Originally posted by fudgester:How about cross-dressing?![]()
I can understand that parents simply want the best for their children, but sometimes they're just asking for the sky.Originally posted by hisoka:well for that i might consider for a pretty jc girl but for primary school no thx.
and seriously from the description the parents is prob overbearing and overly-demanding
I suppose that is the perception that parents have with regards to female tutors.Originally posted by alexkusu:female tuition teachers huh~
perhaps they are more 'understanding' and 'softer' when explaining concepts or theories (think motherly, nurturing instincts females have).
My first tuition student:Originally posted by alexkusu:How is it like being a tutor?
I never officially tutored,..only mentored.
I need to get out my shell more![]()
yea, I understand wat u mean. What I am currently experiencing now as well. They expect me to make the students get good grades when they can't even understand some basic words in English, some can't even form a sentence properlyOriginally posted by fudgester:My first tuition student:
He failed his Sec 2 streaming exams. He was given a choice between repeating Sec 2 Exp or going to Sec 3 N(A). He chose the latter.
The way I see it, that was a really bad choice. Why? His foundation was absolutely terrible. When I first took him on at the beginning at Sec 3, he couldn't even solve the following simple linear equation:
x + 2 = 0.
Dude... an average Sec 1 kid can work that out in his head while blindfolded and tied up in a chair. His foundation was so weak that I had to keep falling back to give him a crash course in Lower Sec concepts.
In the end, I was unceremoniously fired for not being able to deliver the goods. Yeah, right. Blame the tutor when the kid's foundation is terrible.
I'll talk more about my other students when I have the time - time for dinner now.
