What did you do? Something terrible happened?Originally posted by alexkusu:aih~
All I ever wanted was to find a nice decent job, earning a basic salary working in the office as well as ocassional lab work. Then find a nice simple girl, settle down and have kids. Just a simple normal life.
And why have my life turned out like this
why me?
Cest la vie~

relax...does it require you guys to redo the whole thing?Originally posted by fudgester:Arrrgh... it turns out that the Aluminium 6061 T6 temper that we're using for the wheelchair that we're fabricating turns into T0 temper upon welding.
What this means is that the welded joints will be about five times weaker than the rest of the chair. This necessitates a major redesigning of the whole frame to ensure that it doesn't fail.
Neither our research nor advice from the dear old prof and the lab tech told us anything about this. We only knew about it after conferring with another two lab technicians earlier this morning.

Well... not quite. The basic design remains the same.Originally posted by mystiv:relax...does it require you guys to redo the whole thing?
hmm i see..dont understand much of it, but hey, good luck for it yeah?Originally posted by fudgester:Well... not quite. The basic design remains the same.
It's the CAD that's gonna kill us. With having to increase the outer diameters of the tubes, Solidworks is gonna give us hell.
And we have to balance the dimension increase with the increase in weight. There's a weight limit that we have to adhere to at all costs.![]()

why not use joints instead of wielding? or is that like a minus on designs, i remember something like that.Originally posted by fudgester:Well... not quite. The basic design remains the same.

Nyet. Joints increase the weight by quite a bit. They may seem lightweight, but really, they all add up.Originally posted by hisoka:why not use joints instead of wielding? or is that like a minus on designs, i remember something like that.
increase outer diameter only what very easy to do with solid works![]()

icic . yeah i know solidworks is perverse but its not that bad, i did the solid works part last time.Originally posted by fudgester:Nyet. Joints increase the weight by quite a bit. They may seem lightweight, but really, they all add up.
And the problem is that when you increase the outer diameters, the joints no longer fit exactly. It's a bit hard to explain... but suffice to say that the parts meet each other at curved surfaces. So when you increase the diameter of one member, you must account for it exactly in another member which is attached to it. It's a delicate balancing act.
And you know how bloody unreliable Solidworks can be - it can give you all sorts of imaginary problems when there are actually none at all.![]()
