Ah yes... reminds me of my former tuition student....
I did all I could to teach that kid, but he wouldn't reciprocate. He seemed to take everything as a joke and couldn't even be bothered to do half the assignments I made him do. Virtually every session was a shouting match with me trying to get him to take his work seriously.
Heck, he could still watch cartoons the night before his exams and totally forget half the things that he was supposed to know.

When I realised that his poor grammar was due to his penchance for Japanese manga and nothing else, I told him to visit the library more often. When he claimed to have insufficient time to do so, I actually went down to Bras Basah Complex to buy good second-hand novels for him. I never charged his mom for the books.
I made him read one novel per month, with a book review to be handed in at the end of the month. When I took his extremely-substandard reviews to task, he complained that the books I bought him were too difficult to read and could not be finished in one month.
Sheesh man... are Roald Dahl and The Three Investigators books too difficult for a 13-year old? His eyes bulged when I told him that I read them in primary school.

In the end, I quit in a huff after his final exams. His mother offered to draw me back by upping my pay, but I declined.
My mental health is more important than money.
