I recommend doing this at least once every six weeks or so. A highly-fragmented HDD can really slow things down.
Imagine having to search for one chapter of a book on one shelf and having to search for the next chapter on another shelf. That will give you an idea of how a fragmented disk can slow things down. Files that are fragmented will take longer to read.
With defragmentation, you can put all the separate parts of the file together, allowing for faster reading speeds.
Consult mayi for more details... I'm still a computer n00b.

I've been using power drills, hacksaws and grinding machines... and my worst injury so far was a small scratch on my left hand. -
