Driving to Genting?!

hi pple,
have this crazy idea of driving up to genting next month in my 6 month old VIOS.. i've never drove beyond JB..
will probably undertake the task in the daytime...
issit advisable? should i simply drop the idea b'cos of the high risk? issit easy to find the way? should i be well equipped with firearms or pocket knife will do?
hope to hear from experience of pple out there... thanx.. -
As long as your car is built to take RPG rounds without its paint peeling off, by all means, carry on.

no need just go to the workshop and tune your car for the long journey and if u have some $$$ to spare , consider installing some NOS to use in the N-S highway. Also, try to remove the rpm limiter so your car can go at 230+. Ditto if your car has speed limiter.Buy some Parangs in case of robbery etc

It should be okay with Vios (6 month old). U might want to consider driving half way to the foot of the cable car and take the cable car up instead if you feel your car/our yourself cannot take the stress anymore.Originally posted by Axl:hi pple,

Daytime going up should be safer than night. But do take note not to go during the peak period. Going up the mountain is stressful enough for the car, if you get JAM on the way up, then lagi fed up.
Go for a service check before embarking on the trip. To be extra caution, change to a higher grade of braking fluid(higher temperature) during the next service, should not cost too much.
Also try not to get King Kong sitting inside your Vios going up the slope.

Do check all the necessary stuff, like water level, coolant level, brakes and hydraulic fluids, air pressure for your tires and do make sure you have a spare tire.Bring extra water containers and some gunny sacks in case you are stuck in a big pothole.Make sure you lock your doors when driving around populated places.

buy windbreaker for ur car in case it contracts to a 1:50 scale of ur car due to low temp...

Maps, i got them at popular bookstore at JB. If u speak malay it will be of great help. IMO, Malaysian are bad in road direction. Beware they point u to HOLLAND...i kana a few times before...

I heard from those Genting chiongsters that parking at the base of the cable car is pretty safe... but preferably you get some sort of wheel locking device as deterrence. -

I suggest that you do a break @ Alor Gajah R&R... There got better ammenities

if ur car is manual, would be better. auto power would be sluggish for vios. u have to put to low gear most of the time, like manual using third and sometimes second. first time driving up better to do so in the day. yeah take a break along the highway at the R&R with the KFC and A&W joints. the toilets are cleaner too. map can buy from most bkshops here...popular or kino. beware of crosswinds at the ayer keroh area. always see traffic police at the malacca, ayer keroh stretch. dun need to go to KL city to get to genting. after u pass sungei besi toll plaza, keep left and head for kuantan. u will see prominent signage to guide u to genting. better to drive all the way up. safer as the car is parked in hotel premises and more flexible too as u may wanna go for a spin to the pagoda temple down the resort a bit. cable car queues can be hell on wkends. there is a petrol station at the resort. ok plan well, drive safely and have fun !

Journey is usually safe. Just keep the habit of locking your car. Cases of car robbery happens usually at traffic light and your car is not locked. Or when you stop your car with your car being unlock and unattended (E.g. Petrol station). So, keep a good habit, but do not worry unduly. Just make sure car is locked whenever GF is in car alone.
Directionwise, there is usually only two places where you might get terribly confused. One is getting on the highway in JB. The other is after exit near KL and turning onto Genting. If you already farmiliar with JB, then that one should not be a problem. For the one near KL, all I will advise here is that follow the sign to Kuantan. If you follow that, you will get to Genting. Genting is along the road from KL to Kuantan.
Carwise, you will have to go down to gear 1-2 in several places near the top. So, be prepared for that. Personally, that is where I find the most fun to play with gear. Feels cool to have the constant need to switch gear all the time. In fact, I was like playing daytona on the way up. On the way down, be warned! Don't go too fast. the downslope makes the car accelarate easily and the winding road is fun, but that is also where it is most dangerous.
For a map, just go to another big bookstore either in Singapore or JB. It is quite easy to find one actually. -
The way to Genting
(this is the best of the streets i can remember, please dbl check the map k)
1.From Sg besi toll go stright then take a left at the intersection after the air stripe then take a first right go stright to Jalan Sultan Ismail , head on to Pudu and go all the way stright, you will reach Ampang, go on the lower deck of the road as there is a upper deck when you reach there, after that u will see a sign left to Jalan ulu ampang, take that turn, if is correct you will pass hotel flamango on the left , follow the road all the way stright and you will be on the way to kuantan ... there will be a toll which you will have to pay RM$2 .. pass that toll and go stright .. you will see a exit to Genting
If you ever lost your way from Sg Besi to Genting, go to petrol kiosk and ask for directions to Hotel Flamingo then from there go stright will do ....
There will be a point on the way many people will make a mistake is they turn a junction before and reach Peker liling bus terminal instead of Jalan ulu ampang
2.From the Last toll plaza , Sungei Besi, head strignht down towards Jalan Ampang , then take the left towards Jalan Ulu ampang and head stright to the Toll.

Definitely good exercise for your car, either put your car to some stress test or let you know how bad your car conditions are..... -

The last time i climbed up Genting, start off around 3am from Singapore. Go via causeway, no traffic. Chiong all the way...have breakfast around Batu Caves area. First light, start the journey up the mountain..

Different people have a pace that is suitable for themselves. Fast driver is not driving a pace that is comfortable to them when they have to slow down to wait for the slow drivers. The vice versa applies.
Always predetermine a location to meet in the front, and each go at his own pace and meet later. If it possible get a walkie talkie for all the cars. Save cost , safety and communicate better...
