Auto gear are more prone to wear and tear than manual.Originally posted by julian_lim:Will it cause any grievious damage or is it better if I shift to Neutral gear while waiting for the red light to turn green?
What is the Neutral gear used for anyway?

heez i beg to differ. either way should keep the brakes on. at neutral the car may roll so slow it's out of your knowing, but enough to make a dent on the bumpers. at D, you know it's gonna move, you always keep your brakes on.Originally posted by Praetorian111:from a techical point of view shifting to neutral may cause wear and tear that results in premature usage of the gearbox.
But for safety and personal preferences, shifting to neutral may deem as a better choose as it prevents any accidental movement that may cause accidents to occur as a process.
I disagree too...Putting in neutral means you might nor apply brakes which make it more dangerous if someone knock you from behind...esp when you are the first car at the traffic light junction...Originally posted by Praetorian111:But for safety and personal preferences, shifting to neutral may deem as a better choose as it prevents any accidental movement that may cause accidents to occur as a process.
Alternativey, you can pull handbrake if you are lazy to step on the brake even when the car is in D...Just leave the transmission alone....Originally posted by houndy:Keep the gear at D and step on the breaks...if you want to switch to neutral, do pull up the handbrake
This is not really that good... heard it will wear off your gearOriginally posted by free4ever:Alternativey, you can pull handbrake if you are lazy to step on the brake even when the car is in D...Just leave the transmission alone....![]()
Originally posted by free4ever:I totally agree with you on that point, it could happen when you want to push your car when you run out of fuel for instance hehehe
If you car breaks down, try pushing the car wit the gears in P or D, the car probaby will not move. N is also useful here.
And one more thing, shifting frequently will cause wear and tear but that does not mean shifting into N will do damage the gearbox. Example when you are waiting for someone, shifting to N might be a good idea.I think I would rather off my engine than keeping it idling for some time. The manual I read strongly against engine idling. Idiling is only for coldstarting the car only...
