Luxury or economical??

Although my family is above average in terms of wealth, but my dad has never thought of buying expensive cars such as Mercedes S350 or BMW 7 Series. My dad could have easily paid for either of this luxury marques in full cash but he bought a Toyota Camry instead. He often told me that a car is a depreciating asset and money shouldn't be wasted in buying expensive cars.
On the other hand, my uncle who drives a Jaguar XK disagreed. He told me that 'life is short, we should enjoy as much as we can.' He said that my father was being 'over-thrifty' and that my dad should learn to be more carefree with his finances and enjoy life more.
Now, am in a dilemma...both of them seem to be right, but i don't know which side i should stand on.
What do u guys think?...Please air your views..

if you can afford a luxury car and your wallet does not feel any effects then y not. pamper yrself. Save all the money to prepare a super grand funeral for yrself???

i'm of a different society status as you, but i do agree with both sides, ur dad & ur uncle. my dad was pragmatic, he din go beyond 1.6 for the previous rides. hyundai elantra, honda civic. well we're having a camry now for a couple of yrs. to you it's economical, to us it's sorta a luxury already. well why not, since my dad's already half a century old. perhaps this is his last ride before he gets too old to drive? so why not have a glorious end to his driving life?

I agree wif ur dad cuz my mum is exactly the same...!
And i believe when suddenly ur family is in sudden need for money...eg medical bills, business fail, etc u will understand ur dad view point
Oh....and sorie to doubt u, how do u actually know he can afford to pay all in cash, he may haf other financial commitments dat u r not aware of....
And even if he has the spare cash and he goes and buy the 7series den he may be throwing all his spare cash in and wun haf any for a rainy day.
Which IMO is pretty stupid of cuz unless he has tons of spare cash....

Actually both are right in their own ways. It really depend on individual's character.
Your dad is more rational and his view of wasting roughly close to 8K a year on a 7-series or S350 don't seem rational to him. I believe that to him, money can be better spent elsewhere now or in the future (savings).
Your uncle is obviously a very different character than your dad. He probably has a "We may never see tmr attitude". Although he spent the huge amount of money on his car, if the car is something that he enjoy it then why not?
It all boils to if your uncle or your dad feels the money is well spent or not. Even if your dad go and buy a merc or bmw tmr, if he don't enjoy it, then what's the point? Might as well drive camry. On the other hand, if you uncle is restraint from buying his jag XK, I think he will feel miserable, which then why not spent the money for something he enjoy.
Just live life the way you want it as long as you can afford it, it is not that you need to drive the biggest, most expensive car possible, but the satisfaction you get from owning the car you want.

7series depreciation only 8k??????? i think its more like close to 15k a yr or even 20k.

It all depends on how you much spare $$ you have. If after buying a S class or 7 series and this wont hurt your pocket and still have tonns of spare cash, go for it. On another hand, if after buying the camry has left with no spare $$, go buy a Altis.
Life short, play hard!! No need to leave too much $$ for your children
Note: S Class/7 series dep abount 18-20K/yr -
if yr're rich, get something tht u really like.. not just simply for the need or just its the most expensive car.. just look ard to find wad u like.. and u wont go wrong..

Go buy an Evo, S15 or wadeva.. or if u more relak type, just any family sedan... instead of one big, expensive car, u get 2 cars then u no nid snatch wif ur dad...kekeke -

Possible when he was think of a luxury car, he thought of you more. His love for you is more then his urge to pamper himself. That is why he forgo the luxury and save whatever penny so that to ensure he have more to provide for you in the future. He would rather you be the one driving the bigger and better car instead.
It is not the car that you should be appreciating, but your dad love that you should be treasure. He may be just driving a camry but his love for you is a roll-royce, which you should be extremely proud of and treasure it. -

Anyways i will go for more economical ones ... having a big luxurious car for wad? Squeez in multistory carpark and get scretch? trust me i have experienced that before and damn heart ach lor
