COEs fall to new lows
CHRISTMAS has come early for car buyers, with certificate of entitlement prices falling to new lows.
Results of the final tender of the year released by the Land Transport Authority yesterday showed premiums at their lowest this year.
The COE for cars above 1,600cc was the least expensive, having fallen by nearly $2,600, to $18,708.
Premium for certificates used for smaller cars (up to 1,600cc) ended at $20,117 - over $2,000 lower than the previous price at a tender a fortnight ago.
The new premium for Open category COEs is $21,298, some $1,500 off its previous price.
The last time car COEs were this low was in 1992.
Motor traders have begun cutting prices in response. Nissan distributor Tan Chong International was among the first off the mark, reducing its car prices by $3,000. Borneo Motors, distributor of main rival Toyota, has cut prices by $2,000.
Businesses have reason to be happy too. The COE for commercial vehicles also fell to a new low of $4,301, $550 lower than previously. Prices of Toyota trucks and vans, the bestsellers here, were shaved by $1,000 yesterday.
Motorcyclists will pay $601 for their certificate, down from $663 the last round.
