he is right. you HAVE to look beyond monthly installment. Monthly installment only constitutes about half the expenditure on a normal 1.5-1.6 car.Originally posted by hengrix:Hey the advice is clear and right, DONT BUY A CAR. U defintely cant afford it. Yes true the monthly can be just 500+ for a new car, but do u know it will cost abt 1.1-1.2 k per mth to maintain a car, including those car park, insurance and road tax, not adding the maintenance charges. And if you think u can just dispose it when u cant afford, think again coz nobody will want to buy a used car given the low price now. Unless your pay is 3k and above, dont commit suicide. Take your train or bus and though is 200+ for that, there is no other maintenace or extras. Trust me, your pay wont be enuf, get this idea off your head!!!
well onit, i paid for my car in full, now the cost is only operating cost. fuel+parking+once a yr road tax+ once a yr insurance+servicing. Sure can kill you know, even though i don't have instalment to pay. your transport cost of 223 mthly is quite ok what, imagine you have to pay much more to convert to car. my operating cost is 400pm, taking insurance n road tax divide by 12 plus the monthly parking n petrol. so think twice b4 u commit...Originally posted by onit:hey wolf...
thanks for the reply....reallly appreciate it...so i guess if i were to called off the presea deal.that 100 gotta get burned...stupid me...
naywae...if the budget gets to 500 and i need a 0 driveway....whether first hand or second hand...u guys think will be possible for me to get....sorry for the many queries...
purpose is direct...my fares thru train to my workplace....TEKONG gets me poorer by 223 a mth....so tot must why invest in a car....
Onit, just wait for a few more years, that what most of us did.Originally posted by onit:hey wolf...

I thought onit says he will set aside 300 / 500 for instalment, so probably he would have taken the other costs into account. It will be quite safe to add another $600-$800 on top of your monthly instalment to calculate how much you will be paying for a month. Older car, you might need to add more for the higher fc and maintenance.Originally posted by hengrix:Hey the advice is clear and right, DONT BUY A CAR. U defintely cant afford it. Car sharing is more expensive if you rent often. I'm on cityspeed car sharing scheme.Originally posted by mdhisham:Greetings :
Hi Onit,
Look at thoes advises that was given to you & u hav done ur 'homework' which is ur "personal finances". Ask yourself, Do u really need a car ? Do u really can afford the maintenance after getting one ? Strange eh, thoes earning 5K per month still take public transport !!!Well, if you can't buy, then with thoes $300-$400 per month you have, why don u join car sharing ?
Just join for the first year lah and you'll see, how much u need the car ?

I tend to agree with zenixth.Originally posted by zenixth:Car sharing is more expensive if you rent often. I'm on cityspeed car sharing scheme.
I would drive only on weekends. So if I rent a car for the weekends, using the CitySpeed weekend package (Fri 7pm till Mon 8am), a Category B car, i would need to pay S$175.90. But the free mileage is only 100km, which is very insufficient.
If I were to buy a OPC Kia Rio for instance, the monthly installment is ard this amount or lesser.
Thanks for your comments.Originally posted by free4ever:I tend to agree with zenixth.
Car sharing (and rental) is more of a if you need a car occasionally. On a weekly basic, it might be rather expensive.
Citing the above scenario, a cat B car of cityspeed is one that is 1.5 auto, cars like lancer 1.5, vios 1.5, sunny 1.5, etc. If you are willing to look for a budget rental (we have one here, in fact, in this forum...), you pay ard $130 for 2 days rental, plus the most impt part, you get the unlimited km. Petrol around $25 for say around 200km (based on a 13-14km/l), you pay only $155, which is still much cheaper than car sharing.
Note that car sharing charges $0.40 per km, and it is very likely that you would exceed, so you end up paying extra, a lot extra if you travel a lot. As a comparison if you base the calculation using 200km for $25, you get $0.125 per km. Almost 4 times of petrol cost. That's how they earn.
Conclusion, car sharing is much more expensive than car rental, but it does offer you flexibility of taking and returning the car be it the location or time factor.
So...you are paying around $200 for car sharing, which means $800 a month, for rental about $650 a month, just to have access of a car for 2 days a week
which don't you think you would be better off owning a opc???![]()

At least for opc, you still have the flexibility to choose when you want to drive the car and you can be sure that nobody is fighting to use the car from you. You can also use the car, if there is a need to, on weekdays.![]()
