Cold air intake?

Hi, anyone know what is the function of cold air intake aka mushroom? What is the power gain compare to extractor and muffler change? Thanks in advance!

my humble knowledge tells me that cold air intake allows your engine to combust air which has more oxygen molecules per unit volume, as compared to warmer air. [the lower the temperature, the less the kinetic energy of the air molecules, the closer the molecules are bonded together, and so the more of them per unit volume.] with more oxygen molecules, there will be greater combustion between the mixture of air & fuel in the engine, resulting in more power more va va vroom... -
its a garden inside the engine bay. got mushrooms n snails...

extractor change will the backpressure, muffler change will affect how easily the exhaust gases flow thru it. basically a proper tuned setup is needed for a whole extractor, head and muffler setup to get an optimum flow and backpressure.

actually, extractor, exhaust head n muffler are considered a whole set of components. Mushrooms should have a negligible effect since its just street moddification we're talking about. elaboration would explain why thos Formula 1 cars have extractors shaped the way they do, but that is a whole load of physics really, something about thermal dynamics and fluid mechanics.Originally posted by trueno86:head care to elaborate? i only got extractor and muffler changed, thinkin of mushroom next... -

no no. mushrooms help with top end power. anyways, what do u have? Have u considered plugs like the Denso Iridiums? Tuning the air:fuel mix should also help, but that comes at the cost of increased FC. IF u want to do that tho, remember not to run it too rich. What else? hmmm Just changing yr box filter to an aftermarket one like K&N, but retaining the original box setup should help as well. Will list more stuff when I can think of it. -

change your spark plug and cables.... as for CAI.. it is 250 bucks for my car.. dont know about yours.. but it will make your car sounds very very loud...

Put simply, extractors are pipes leading directly out of the exhaust ports which allow exhaust gases to flow more freely out. As the exhaust gases pass through pipes, they tend to compress at certain points, causing high-pressure spots that restrict the gas flow. Backpressure refers to the pressure created by residual exhaust in the combustion chambers (which are never entirely expelled in the exhaust stroke). Engines are designed with backpressure in mind, so that the compression is optimum when the residual exhaust gases and the fuel-air mixure (taken in during the following intake stroke) are compressed.
If you add extractors to the car, there is less residual gas left in the chamber than was accounted for in the engine's original design. In turn, the pressure of in the chamber at the top of the compression stroke is lower than it would be in the original specifications, resulting in less pressure when the fuel-air misture is ignited. As a result, the engine loses low-end torque.
If you add extractors to the car, you need to be careful to ensure that the intake is also modified such that the pressure at the top of the compression stroke is the same as specified in the original design (i.e. it makes up for the loss of backpressure). That way, you don't lose low-end torque, and because the exhaust gases flow out more freely, you get better power at high revs too, ecause the exhaust stroke saps less power.
Well, that's my understanding of it anyway.
