I notice that manufacturers are currently designing their cars to provoke a reaction, some in the name of forging brand identity and making their cars appeal to the young and young-at-heart. They figured that nobody wants to buy a car which makes them look old.
Some of them look radical (Renault Megane), a few look like they've been drawn with just rulers and set squares (Land Rovers) while others look like complete disasters (Pontiak Aztek).
It seems to be the look in vogue after the latest Ford models were panned for being too bland, but I cannot stand tolerate cars being designed radically just for that purpose, without (paradoxically) paying attention to conventional ideas of proportion and beauty. Pillar-mounted taillamps are fine but not queer bootlines (BMW). The 612 Scaglietti has undersized wheels while Renault's Vel Satis looks terrible compared to the Opel Signum.
So among the current cars, which ones do you think will stand the test of time like the E-Type and the 300 SLR?
this is why there is so many concept cars nowsdays~
To get the ball rolling...my picks are:
Alfa Romeo GT
Aston Martin AMV8
Audi A8 (It's so difficult to find fault with the design)
Fiat barchetta
Jaguar XJ and XK (queer overhangs but gorgeous otherwise)
Maserati Quattroporte (I know Will85 compared it to a catfish but hey...)
Porsche Boxster 2 and 911 (997-series)
Seat Cordoba (very neat)
Honorable mention:
The shakin' ass of the Renault Megane 2 - today's answer to the boat-tailed Alfa? - and the original Daewoo Kalos, before GM butchered it in making the Aveo.
I had doubts of Porsche when the 996 came out, but the 997 should keep its charm for quite a long time...
I didn't like the 996 either.
