Driven a proton 1.5M for 5 years. Owned it first hand since may 2000.
Head my advice - NEVER buy a MADE in Malaysia car!
Overall proton is good in performance. Power is good. Won a few "races" with some japanese makes on and off, they were Auto transmissions of coz.
Handling is poor. Build quality is Worst. Fuel efficiency 10km /L!
I had even complained to Cycle and carriage during year 2000 until they are willing to extend my warantee from 1 year 20000km to 2 yr 40000km juxt because i was facing SO many problems wif it.
Let me recall what i had change for the 5 years ownership :
1) Shocks
2) engine mountings
3) both shafts
4) air con compressor
5) clutch pump
6) fuel pump
7) car alarm

power window master switch
9) brake light spring ( brake lights refuse to goes off after brake pedal was release)
10) radiator water pump
These are what i could recall within 20secs. Too many until i am sure i had left out at least 3 items. The feeling is sucky coz i felt tt i ws like driving a 2nd hand car since year 2000 when i got it first hand!
My mileage over 5 years was 130K. Avg ard 25k per yr which can be considered as moderate. And i was not a hard driver either accpet for a few occasions to clear some carbon off my exhaust.
The only thing good about this car is - you can repair all the above parts across the straits at a good price! But, come to think about it, my friend whos driving a year 2000 sunny did not even paid a single cent replacing any of the above parts at all! and its ride quality is still better than mine in any aspect.
I have had enough with this car and had already book the new nissan sunny on feb. Will collect on may. All the best if you wan to get a PW!
If you wan to think about buying a Waja or GEN 2, consider twice also. Had many relatives in malaysia and no good feedbacks from these cars either apart from the LOTUS handling feature.
