2nd hand Honda Civics

I was just surfing through sgcarmart... and I saw that a lot of honda civics had been snapped up... I was just wondering whether the civic is really that reliable... esp the 2nd hand models... and the EG series... the 4dr ones... tot my fren told me that the cars might have been driven hard by their previous owners and probably not good in the long run...
Any opinions? -

I know... but hard until you have to change parts every few months cos of previous wear and tear? I do not know abt others...but my fren owns an EG6...he does maintain his car frequently..till now his car in tip-top condition...to tell you honestly, got buyers wana buy his car at the price which my fren bought at that price...well..soudns to me quite a deal for my deal..he has drove for abt 1yr plus..Originally posted by LH83:I know... but hard until you have to change parts every few months cos of previous wear and tear? That's to mean that his car did not depre. much..he juz paid for serving,petrol n misc. -

Actually, with close ratio gearing and high final drive, I think a lot of EGs DO travel at 80-90 kmh on average when not gunning.
Otherwise travelling at 100 kmh, rpm at 3800-4000 rpm, is a torture.

All old cars condition will be somewhat worn, definitely. These cars are driven harder, yes, so maybe they are more worn. But on the other hand, owners of these cars are usually car enthusiasts and always take care of their cars.
I know of normal drivers who drive family cars who dunno how to maintain their cars. Just drive until something spoil, sometimes never monitor mileage for oil change etc...
For car enthusiasts, they are quite dedicated. Regular oil changes with top brand oils for a start. Some redo entire air-con system. Other things redone = drive shafts, steering racks, brake pumps, brake cylinders, brake calipers and pads, radiator, distributor. Entire engine also sometimes rebuilt... rebore, or new sleeves, better pistons etc. Even studs and bolts might be branded ones!
Interior wise, new upholstery, new Recaro seats, new audio system, new audio board, new carpets, new steering wheel, gear knob etc...
So there are actually many EGs that have been redone sui sui already, almost like new!! If u get these type, no prob.
Of coz, there will be those poorly maintained types or a sui-sui one that has been stripped of all its saleable parts before sale, then those type you have to rebuild over again. Depends on ur luck and finding the rite car.
All I can say is, an old EG has more chance that the engine and parts have been rebuilt as compared to maybe an old Sunny. If the trip meter on the Sunny has 200,000 km, it prob is true, running on the same engine that u are buying in the car.
An EG with 200,000 km may have a spanking new engine inside. Maybe the mileage isn't even real cuz he's prob changed his meter cluster b4. Heh

I would suggest u to buy an automatic car rather than a "cheong" car...that's what i told my fren to ask him sell away...no point driving a manual...pick up so fast also like that....fastest speed limit on 90km/h...no point really...pick on comfort car...

Condition of the older Honda engines should be ok. They are famous for being bulletproof.
unless the previous owner did some forced induction...else it should be ok..just have to do a check on the gaskets and rubbers to make sure they are still well..and u are ready to go.
In fact if the ex owner didnt drive the car hard...the throttle body maybe clogged with carbon deposits...haha... -
My '92 EG2 is in excellent condition... despite being driven hard by all it's previous owners and me.
I'm sure they maintained it as well as I do ( it's my baby and I take care of it )
And for skeptics who may ask how i know it's previous owners drove it hard...well... it's an EG2. you try driving one for long without pushing it...

agree generally with guitarman. of course, there exists a rare breed of eg owners who really take car of their cars so u'd be lucky to find one who's willing to part with his ride. only prob is finding one and when someone loves their car so much and takes such good care of it well, chances are, good luck finding a mint one......

Heh... it's still a long way for me to get a car... but initially I was considering my first car to be a civc... Hopefully by the time I can get one, they'll still be around... hehe... Thanks for the tips guys!

my poor friend got his lancer from his sis...sis din maintain it by adding engine oil regularly...pistons now wear out.engine drinks petrol like no biz.he have to top up 50bucks of petrol every 3 days......overhaul engine 4k.i want to buy from him also cannot.sad
