Do you still manage to save $ once you've a car?

I can't. The car is taking up whatever money I have left. After calculation, with the bills and everything else, I've about $100 left a month, which is usually non-existence~
How abt you people? -
did u realize this before or after you have a car....

Still got spare $$$ to save ... which I think is important ..
Me try to set the fixed expenditure to ard 30% to 40% max.
And try to save at least 20% if possible. So if something goes wrong and urgent need of $$$, there is still spare cash.. like repair of car too .. -
i think if still be about to hv about 20-30% for saving shall be good enuff

now, no savings coz rest of my pay goes into housing/ reno loans and bills. before my house came, also no savings coz rest of my pay goes into modding my car................. *jumps around like raving lunatic*

Well, another way you can try is to force yourself to commit to saving insurance. Believe there's another term for that......... but the only catch is that the money can only be taken out in 10-15 yrs time, depending on how long you pay. At least something.
For me, I'm trying to clear the loan asap. That's why i'll never take 10 yrs loan............. unless my reserve pool is deep, haha............
Btw, you got yourself what car rumie? Thought you looking at Tuscani or Picanto. -
Me too. ......Actually I am already in the red for the last 3 months. Can't stop modding. And a little accident set me back further. Lucky I have enough savings to at least tide me through for the next 1 year or so, even if I mod away 1k per month. Whatever money I have left from each month, I would most likely dump them into my investment account. Anyway, it is like another saving too. Just bite-hard for the next 5 years, and I am a free man!
Mine is a investment saving account. 2 year later, you can take any amount out any time you want. all risk taker somemore ... for me, even I dont have much commitment I dont really take out so much of my earning investing into something that just look nice to me. Like modding it and serve no purpose .. maybe I am too practical, I buy car to serve me and not me serving it ...
guess just different pple different ways of treating a car.
For me .. I will just invest more in term of type of engine oil use, spark plug and keep it in good condition. addition mod ... no thanks
Got hit with bad time before so I always believe I have deep enuz saving to tide me thru a long time. Wont take uncalculate risk, moreover .. just got hitch not too long ago and thus have spend also a large chunk of saving in housing, reno, funiture and such ... another big spender is coming also .. haiz .. so years of saving also dont seems to be enuz ....
Prefer not to spend so much on car so that I can eat better and still buy some other stuff I like ... -
if you have no savings after getting a car, then tat's a very bad decision. You should sell the car away if yr job do not required it.
for me, so long as the air-con is cold, engine works perfect, could ferry me to & fro, no problem, then okie lah. Dun care whether it's a BMW or a Merc etc..
The car is a liability.. reduce yr liability lah... else another case of asset rich but cash poor.. -
As for me, I stillhave abt $1000 left after deducting the car loan, parking, personal insurance, household contribution and etc. Can still save but cannot anyhow spend too buy latest gadget like notebooks, handphone and etc.

I put aside 33.33% of my pay as savings first... then worked out the cost of my housing, day to day expenses, etc... THEN bought a car based on the remainder of my budget, taking into consideration road tax, petrol, parking, insurance, etc... That's why I ended up buying only a Honda 1.5 Fit... not a BMW or Merc...
I calculated monthly car expense on an average milage of 50km a day at $1.7 per litre of petrol.. which I'll never reach (at most average of 20 km a day... and will use cheaper petrol too). Also added in extra $50 a month for bi-yearly maintainance and any unforseen repairs... So I'm ok... comfortable... No flashy car, but comfortable life -

Single here, so now is the time to have fun. Anyway, taking the car apart and DIY stuff and put it back can be consider a hobby, just a very ex one. I calculated that if I am still single in the future, I have about 3 years to save up for housing. Anyway, my mods include ICE. Just like in my room I have DVD system and projector. When I married friend came into my friend, he just say a turely Bachelor room.
If I am lucky enough to get hitch soon, car might have to go for bigger projects and stuff. But now is the time to have fun. Taking public transport with your love ones isn't that bad, taking it alone is boring!
I once heard a friend analyse that if you can't save at least 1 hour from drving per day, that it isn't worth it. I reduced my time of going to work from 1.75 hours to 0.5 hours per trip. interesting info so far...
think i still prefer the idea of able to enjoy life with a car that you want without any other commitment (e.g. family, gf, if possible).
but then again, a bit lonely...
hard to enjoy life in singapore...

i rather be rich by having more cash and take a bus than to have a liability and little savings....

Depends on your pirority. I still haven't have enough fun with my car. Like my friend, they can save up 12k in a year just to use it in a trip up some mountains. Only 3 weeks time. COE falling... despite attempts to tinkle with it.. open bid etc..
ARF falling... meaning dep/yr becomes higher.
the moment u buy a new car, the clock starts ticking.. to the scapyard after 5 yrs.. => more cars scrap => more COE.
u get into negative equity problems the moment u wish to scrap the car in time to come forcing you to continue to drive despite cheaper car.
the only way, bankrupt ... auction..
So back to the vicious cycle..
So is it worth getting a new car ??
