heard this b4 not sure if its true but the lower gears are used for instances when you traveling long distance downhill and cannto go too fast. the lower gears act as engin brake so that you dun run out of brake padding which would be a disaster for auto carsOriginally posted by scotts07:Guys,i need you to teach me,

N stands for Neutral. Use this when you are in the car but with engine on (stationery mode).Originally posted by scotts07:Guys,i need you to teach me,

den after "2" shift to wat? then "D" use for wat?Originally posted by stupidjoe:N stands for Neutral. Use this when you are in the car but with engine on (stationery mode).
1 is the lowest gear (but powerful). Use it when you are starting off from a stationery mode (save fuel). Engage 2nd gear after tat, and so therafter.![]()
Yes. You are right. The lower gears on the automatic transmission act as an engine brake for the car when it is travelling down steep gradients. That is to prevent the car from going down too fast.Originally posted by hisoka:heard this b4 not sure if its true but the lower gears are used for instances when you traveling long distance downhill and cannto go too fast. the lower gears act as engin brake so that you dun run out of brake padding which would be a disaster for auto cars
You can use the overdrive (OD) button for an automatic without the tiptronic (+/-) override.Originally posted by ceecookie:you can use 2 and 1 when u want to overtake cars when u're on the 3rd gear or 4th.....this will make the rpm to very high which will meet the max torque or hp and then u can overtake faster...
but it is easier if the car is with the - and +....this means u do not have to chift high and down from D to 2......but when u downshift the engine only allow you to ram untill the needle reach the reline...above that the engine will auto upshift for u..

N(WHEN I USE THIS)?? - neutral. normally i use it when i'm at traffic lights or waiting for ppl under their block for at least 5 mins[color]
D - [color=red]drive. normal driving. the transmission will jump by itself
2-?? - gear 2. when climbing slope or using it as engine brake, be it down slope or cannot brake in time..very useful
1-?? - gear 1. climb mountain use this one..very powerful...but dun drag too long
other than that, i believe ur car shld have a OD (overdrive) button. use that when u wanna drop gear from 4 to 3...use it for overtaking or u wana drag the vehicle, eg up benjamin sheares bridge etc..

eh, not racing leh uncle. want to overtake just put your foot down can liao.Originally posted by ceecookie:you can use 2 and 1 when u want to overtake cars when u're on the 3rd gear or 4th.....this will make the rpm to very high which will meet the max torque or hp and then u can overtake faster...

wat does engine brake means? so when coming downhill,am i not right to say that we shouldn't use D? and for normal driving.can we use 2 or 1 in expressway?Originally posted by P|R|N|D:Yes. can overtake but very slow liao....downshifting ca overtake faster.....useful in M'sia....Originally posted by TwinTurbo_Supra:eh, not racing leh uncle. want to overtake just put your foot down can liao.
need to blip the throttle when u downshift?![]()
then what abt manual override? the + and - next to the DOriginally posted by free4ever:A four speed auto transmission as compared to a manual, it is roughly like this
P - Neutral with brakes
R - Reverse is engaged
N - Neutral without brakes
D (with overdrive off - no lights on dashboard) - highest gear achievable: 4th gear
D (with overdrive on) - Highest gear achievable: 3rd gear
D2 (or S) - Highest gear achievable: 2nd gear
D1 (or L) - Highest gear achievable: 1st gear
So in D1 or L, it is just like engaging 1st gear on your manual car, engine brake strong, powerful, but not fast. Sames goes for D2, D...
Notice I mention highest gear achievable, not D2 is 2nd gear. That's the difference between auto and manual. That is to say that in D2, the transmission can still select first gear if it think that the car need the power to move along, eg like when you are very slow or going up a very steep slope.
If you are able to understand the logic, you would know why usually people leave their selection in D, when driving, because the transmission will select the correct gear for you, say 1st gear at 10km/h and 4th at 80km/h.
More slightly experienced auto transmission will know how to select the gear by putting the lever at D and control using their foot (accelerator). The transmission will be able to detect the amount of power demanded by the driver at the moment and select the correct gear for the driver.
not all autos are equipped with this function. but those that are will be able to use these "+" and "-" to select their desired gearing juz like a manual car. only thing left "auto" at this point would be that the engine will still upshift automatically when u hit redline with ur foot down on the accelerator.Originally posted by ceecookie:then what abt manual override? the + and - next to the D
not really true....was driving an E-class and i went all the way till the rev limiter came in....Originally posted by tailslide:not all autos are equipped with this function. but those that are will be able to use these "+" and "-" to select their desired gearing juz like a manual car. only thing left "auto" at this point would be that the engine will still upshift automatically when u hit redline with ur foot down on the accelerator.
For the above, I am referring to the conventional auto, not those tiptronic (+,-) kind. How common is that anyway?Originally posted by ceecookie:then what abt manual override? the + and - next to the D
Even if a car comes with a manual override feature which in other words, tiptronic, geartronic or whatever you call it depending on the manufacturer of the car, overdrive is still a standard in all auto transmission cars. Therefore having a manual override feature does not eliminate the overdrive feature at all.Originally posted by free4ever:For those tiptronic kind, it actually replaces the overdrive, D2 and D1. Notice that for this kind of gearbox , there's only P R N D and the + and -. It is like a semi-automatic which provides the driver with some form of control on the gearbox instead of fully automatic.
