u have to ram till the tacho reach the max torque or n/m then upshift.........Originally posted by EkBoy:no need to stick to tat 3000rpm thingy la..
u can even drag to 5000 without problems man.
Some cars u can feel the power at all at 3000rpm
eheh i am havin the same problem as u. juz recently changed to a manual car. i am not sure when shd i change my gear. haha i will always change it ard 2.5k or 2.8k. somewhere near there. but i notice that lots of cars will overtake me or tailgate me till very close.Even van also overtake me. so wat's the most appropriate way to change the gear ?Originally posted by rumie:after driving years on an auto car, i've finally made a change and bought a manual car to drive.
since collected about 6 days ago, i've managed to make the engine died-ed at least 10 times so far...
anyway, still trying to get used to it, but my question is, is it very high on fuel consumption if i were to rev the rpm till about 3k before changing gear?
ironically, i'm trying to save a bit on petrol by driving a manual but at the same time, cos i'm trying not to piss the drivers behind me, i'll try to rev to ard 3k on rpm so that the pick-up will be faster.
also, i dont want others to think that i'm REALLY a P-plater by driving so slow lar (even though i purposely put on the P-plate cos i'm driving a manual after a long time since the last time i drove one..)
i guess it's alright to change gear at ard 2.5k, but my car doesnt seem to pick up really slowly ard this rpm... think cos it's a cheapo car...
so, advice please. thanks!
I am able to change gear around 2.5-2.8rpm for my kelisa and yet still keep up with normal traffic. Can be faster than most at the red light. I also just started diving manual after 4 years of non-driving. At first, I rev too. Then later when I saw how my bro handle my car, I tried to shift at lower rpm. But like most un-experience divers, you will experience engine coughing.Originally posted by rumie:... hey, thanks for the advice, but i'm trying to save on petrol...![]()
As with Kbhucket, I do my gear changes ard the 2500rpm region, seldom above 3000k for normal smooth driving. And can beat most ppl at the red lights.Originally posted by rumie:after driving years on an auto car, i've finally made a change and bought a manual car to drive.

Hmmm..sounds as if rumie is learning how to drive manualOriginally posted by slacker001:Hey rumie not an expert but i drive a stick too; normally what i do is to keep my eye on the speedo, not the tacho. and to use the lower gears to accelerate rather than stretch it in 3rd and 4th. i used to have that problem as i shifted up too early, resulting in sluggish moving off. try shifting up from 2nd to 3rd around 35kph, then to 4th at around 45-50. thus the engine should only be spinning around 2.3-2.6k before shifting. should give you a balance between FC and decent speed. don't worry about stalling, just try to rev it a bit more and release the clutch slowly, till the day you instinctively know where the biting point is. might i ask what capacity car are you driving? mine is a 1.6L, so you might need to adapt a bit. but dont try accelerating hard in 5th or 4th, it's slow and it strains the engine.

you can continue doing dat without having to spend a bomb on fuel..Originally posted by tErI-yAkI:No wonder why my petrol so ex every month.
1st gear to 2nd gear rev to 5-6k rpm.![]()
Nah..dat will waste too much fuel..Originally posted by SexFrenzy:To save petrol on manual car, shift up at 2k rpm and below. You will move like a tortise but save a lot of petrol. Keep your revs as low as possible. Never exceed 60km/h in top gear. When you see a red light in the distance, about 500km away, put to neutral and let the car coast to the red light. When going downhill, put to neutral and let gravity pull your car. Try it![]()

example: netural gear downslope/stopping before a red light.
BUT, heard this is pretty dangerous, ya? why har?
and, one more question:
cos it's quite embarassing to die engine at traffic light, i always put to half-clutch first and WAITED when i know the red light is about to turn green.
like this will waste petrol or not?
Use engine brake to save fuel?? now that's something new!! You can save fuel when your engine is ravving hard when you down shift!!Originally posted by TRD_Sport_M:half clutch will waste petrol.
those netural gear thingy, no nid try, it rubbish & dangerous.
when coming to a stop, downshift, use engine brake, will save more fuel than just using brake.
got some1 say upshift below 2k, dun believe also, rpm too low, car will straggle to move off, will waste fuel also.....
this is wat i read from other webbie.Originally posted by sunnyMAN:Use engine brake to save fuel?? now that's something new!! You can save fuel when your engine is ravving hard when you down shift!!
Well, to each its own. I think its ok to put to neutral to let it roll.. but not neutral on the expressway. As a guide, its ok for me, to put to neutral as long as im going to step on the brakes. (of course not all the time i step the brake i put to neutral.. you noe wad i mean la)
When i learnt to drive, my instructor from bbdc actually told me engine brake is actually the safest way to slow down. as it incorporates the stopping effect from the engine on top of the normal braking. However, it stresses the engine and as we know..stress = not good. The only time I use engine brake is when im going down a steep steep slope or a tight tight long corner
