Actually, the Forester's kerb weight of 1470 kg is not considered that heavy for an SUV (actually, crossover). But you're right, it has damned heavy consumption (but due to other factors).
However, since Motor Image has dropped the price of the Forester, the Airtrek Turbo is now priced at about $7000 above the Forester.
If driven normally (not too hard and not too gently), both Forester and Airtrek have about the same fuel consumption figures lah. For turbo cars, consumption is VERY sensitive to driver's style.....it can fluctuate maybe 20-40% (my estimate) for different drivers in the same car.
Having said that, I've heard of Airtrek Turbos reaching 10 km/litre (in Singapore traffic)....whereas the best I've heard of Foresters is about 9+ km/litre (on the Malaysian N-S highway).
There is something disappointing regarding the sportiness of the Forester though.....the engine-turbo combination is tuned for low-end torque, with max. torque of 245 Nm coming in at only 3200 rpm. Above 4500 rpm, it runs a bit out of steam. What this all means is that it gives good enough acceleration from 0-100 in 8+ secs (not that impressive, but good enough).....but highway overtaking (eg. 80-120) is not equally exhilarating (is that how you spell it?).
Don't get me wrong, the Forester still does a good job at highway passing (probably niftier than 90% of other vehicles on the road).....but er.....one could do with more.
