Refresher Course

Hi to all
I have passed by driving test about 5 years back and have not been driving since because I have no $$ to buy a car. Now, with the lowering of car prices, and with some savings, I plan to make the purchase.
But, now not sure got confidence to go on the road again. I also do not want to endanger myself or other people on the road.
Just to check with any of you got similar experience before and how to solve it? -
there's a course at bbdc for those who have not driven for quite a long time. maybe u can try there.
if not then once u got ur car or borrow a car from ur frenz, and try to drive around ur neighbourhood to get used to the road. but sometimes once u get into the car u'll automatically remember how to drive. jus remember to check ur blindspot. -
U know how much BBDC charge for the refresher course?
Yeah, blind spot darn difficult, coz hands kind of rigin when turn the head over. For those experienced drivers, sometimes they also never check, so lead to small accident. -
but if u go for the refresher course it's not worth it..

u might as well get a car n get someone who have licence too to sit beside u, then drive around n slowly u'll recall wat u need to look out for when driving..
simple.. look out for blindspot, check rear mirror.
for parking it takes time. -
no need...go and ride a go kart...

when u check for blindspot, jus give it a glance to check any vehicles and turn back front fast, and not staring at it for too long if not u'll not know wat will appear in front of ur car suddenly
try not to hold ur steering wheel too tight, relax so as when u turn ur head n check ur blindspot, ur hand on the steering wheel wont move as ur head move..
practice a few more times and slowly u'll get used to it.. -

Ya, first day I collected my car, I was like "o sh*t! why I spend so much money to make myself stress". 1 week later, I started tailgating people liao. 2 months down the road, first accident. Now safety driver! Learn the hard way, you will never forget it!
Heehee! Actually just remember to check blind spot. I gotten dozens of horn for that, was then that I realise a whole 2litre car can squeeze into my small blindspot, totally disappear. My friend wasn't so lucky. Didn't check blindspot can kanna a motocycle. Poor dude fracture his arm, and my friend scare until blur!
Anyway, start slow. Do some test-driving first. It is free and also inline with your objective. I test 3 cars before buying. -

Hey must say you're a real responsible person for wanting to taking up that course. Good to have drivers like that. Others who haven't driven in a while just buy a car, road hog and forget about blind spots, making it hazardous.
But don't spend your money on the course, actually if you just take it slow (off the Lane 1 of course) and maybe have someone guide you along you'll do just as fine. Plus, lots of things you can't really fine tune in the course ie parking and driving in multistorey car parks etc. But really really remind yourself to check blind spot please. And getting a P plate may be good. Congrats when you get that car ya. -

just remember that your mirrors are like your extra pair of eyes on the road and are there for a purpose....

Yea I agree with slacker001, a salute to you for being civic-minded and taking such responsibilties. If you feel that going through bbdc is a hassle, then maybe you'd like to consider checking with private instructors to see if they do offer such courses? I'm sure they wouldn't mind, as it'll be an easier job for them, most likely..

Am sure many of you out there must have different experience when driving 1st time Unaccompanied.
Anyone keen to share the "first time" experience? -
First time driving unaccompanied was pretty ok, because earlier in the day already did a lot of crazy driving with me and my friend, plus going round Pasir Gudang too. So it felt relaxing to drive around the city and all... Maybe that could help you, haha have one mad day, then spend the evening in a relaxed manner

I test-drive my car (before collection) with hand-brakes still "on". Also driven 2 weeks without turning "fully" for my headlamps. Talk about blur! O, by the way, I bought my car after 4 years of no driving.

Oh yaa, don't know how true, but I heard you can take your licence at Escape Theme Park next time..using their go karts..

. Just change the wheel arc. Actually a lancer just decided to stick his head out the main road, and I didn't know what ABS was for then. 
Anyway, now I can judge the road better, brake better, turn better, and shift my gears better. So don't worry too much, just remember to be extra careful and don't drive too fast. Try to keep off right lane until you are comfortable with your car. -
wbucket: oh... but wat has ABS gotta do with ur minor accident? Thot it is for preventing the car from going into skidding when braking... can enlighten??

just get one of those private driving instructors and tell them u want to refresh? Like that, you have someone looking out for you while u get used to driving again. And you can stop anytime.. better than committing to a course.

Yes... looks like best solution (for me) is to look for a private instructor and go for a few sessions (just a few) until confident.
Still looking forward to see more sharing of first time unaccompanied driving experience...
