So confusing .. the car is auto leh.Originally posted by LazerLordz:You can hold a specific gear I think.
What car are you driving ? Does the button have anything printed on it ? Usually all buttons in the car are marked.Originally posted by Icemoon:To all experts,
What is the button on the side of the auto gear that when I press, the word "hold" appears in the status indicator?
What is the button for?
Thanks.

hmm .. but 99% of the time I use the 'D' gear .. ??!!Originally posted by philia:My bet is you are driving the 90s Mazda 626?
When the "Hold" signal appears, the transmission will now be locked in the gear you have selected with the shift lever. It is a system in which the user is able to manually select a gear and implement it to the comfort of the user (much like Steptronic). It is one of the earlier system of a manually shifted electronically controlled automatic. For example, if you turn on the HOLD mode and shift to second gear, the car will start off in second gear and stay there
until you move to another gear.
what is the whole procedure for doing this .. can someone teach me .. thanksOriginally posted by w2k_83:It is very usual for overtaking when u wanna drop gear and reach a higher RPM....

LOL .. if I want to overtake .. shd get an auto with overdrive .. even the 1.6 Hyundai Elantra has it.
Exactly.... My car also comes with the "Ds" mode like lancer but its named as S3 and has the hold button too... The advantage of the button is that u can downgear very swiftly without having to pull the gear stick...Originally posted by rallykid:What some bros said earlier is to let the gear stay and not shift up to acheive higher revs(rpm) which give more power to overtake. Like the Lancer "Ds" mode, etc, etc
all auto cars allows u to downshift to overtake... u dun need manual override... its a matter of how u do it...Originally posted by ceecookie:manual override & Steptronic is quite good...allowing u to downshift to overtake
Sorry I'm a noob when it comes to cars.Originally posted by w2k_83:I dunno whether i shld be the one who shld LOL... Perhaps u shld get your facts right first b4 LOL...
The "hold" button is equivalent to overdrive...
When overdrive is off, the car will not be able to shift up to its most efficient gear, which is the 4th gear for 4AT cars... It is the same when u the hold button is on...
Juz click the button when u want to overtake, the gear will drop from 4 to 3 immediately, the reaction is faster than when u fully depress the accelerator pedal to downgear...
I am driving a mazda 6 as well... I can explain to u what does the HOLD button and its function for.Originally posted by Icemoon:To all experts,

The gear 4 for auto not equivalent to the gear 4 for manual?Originally posted by zerocool85:L + hold = Gear 1
S + hold = Gear 2
D + hold = Gear 3
D - hold = Gear 3 & 4
This mean that when u release hold at D, the gear will shift up from 3 to 4..
I hope u understand what i mean.. to me, the hold function is for u to get more power for overtaking aka downshifting..
U are right in that putting hold maintains a lower gear, but till which gear, that depends on which gear mode u are in as i have clarified earlier on...Originally posted by Lancer947:All is getting confused. The heading is "hold".
All is talking about "overdrive on/off"
Actually, the "hold" is uses only for very slippery road especially when in cold countries where the road is cover with ice or snow. But putting the hold on, it actually maintain at tat low gear and gain better control so tat the gear would not shift when slipage occur.
Hope I am right.![]()
As for the notation for the gears, it does not depend on whether it comes with hold or overdrive... My 323 with hold and my dad's CRV with overdrive both comes in PRNDSL... Its a matter of how the car manufacturer wanna name it...Originally posted by zerocool85:I am driving a mazda 6 as well... I can explain to u what does the HOLD button and its function for.
The hold button is for u to hold ur specific gear...
For other cars with Overdrive function, their gear is PRND321.. But for mazda cars.. it is PRNDSL.
L + hold = Gear 1
S + hold = Gear 2
D + hold = Gear 3
D - hold = Gear 3 & 4
