Is it an offence to drive with one hand?
Monday • January 16, 2006
Letter from Lionel de Souza
While driving along Beach Road, I observed that the driver in front had a lit cigarette between his fingers, dangling out of his car's window.
He was steering with only his left hand.
As he turned into Java Road, he had to brake suddenly when he realised there were pedestrians crossing the road.
What was worrying was that as he did so, he appeared to lose control of his vehicle. Fortunately, he did not knock anyone down.
The use of a mobile telephone while driving a vehicle is a serious offence under the Road Traffic Act.
Does not steering a car with one hand while the other dangling out the window, either holding a cigarette or drumming on the door in tune with music, also amount to "driving without due care or reasonable consideration"?
Could the Traffic Police enlighten me?

But it's also not wrong mah.Originally posted by dragg:most people do it dont mean it is right.
it is just more comfortable driving with one hand, with the other resting.

All drivers will inevitably, at times use one hand to steer the wheel while using the other to do something else. eg. scratch head or look for sunglasses. Boh pian one leh.Originally posted by dragg:i think it is wrong.
but TP dont care.
of course driving with one hand dont include what you just mentioned. many drivers, especially those driving at a high speed, have the habit of putting one hand on the steering and the other on the window.Originally posted by M©+square:All drivers will inevitably, at times use one hand to steer the wheel while using the other to do something else. eg. scratch head or look for sunglasses. Cannot be too rigid also. In a way i'm glad that TP isn't strict about this issue.
Cheers
Originally posted by Praetorian111:No it is not an offence. driving with both hands on the steering wheels is sort of the correct tactic to use for drivers which can be applied to all class of vehicles.
It will be highly recommended that both hands to be on the steering wheel. The reason is being that if the steering is being controlled by one hand, one will tend to steer out of course. (Esp at higher speed) In addtional, one will experience difficulties when doing a turn or a corner if one hand is used.
Having a hand busy engaging a gear is only temporary and it should not be used as an excuse for not having both hands on the steering. With auto transmission, this excuse should be remoted.

It is not a traffic offence. In other words, it does not break any traffic rules and regulation.Originally posted by alwaysdisturbed:so is it ok or nt?
