Suggestion: Countdown timers for red light cameras

Been thinking about it, instead of charging us a couple of hundred bucks each time we run a red, why not install countdown timers at lights where the cameras are installed?
The whole issue, supposedly, for them to install the cameras is because it'll help improve safety and all. But many times, I've seen people slowing down when approaching certain junctions, only because these have red light cameras. Also, when the pedestrian green is blinking, you never know if you're safe enough to drive through, even slowly. One example is the big T-junction in front of the Bukit Timah Fire Station, where the amber comes on immediately after the pedestrian light changes from blinking green to red. And that's dangerous because many people wouldn't stop for a blinking green of course.
My idea is to have countdown timers for these traffic lights to show when the light is about to change to amber, and increase the fines for these places. After all, you don't have a good reason to run a red, now that you know whether you need to slow down or not.

Most Singaporeans are such impatient drivers that a countdown timer will not be of help. I mean, I see it going, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... so what? If I am in a rush, I will still cheong regardless of whether it's counting down or not. In other words, such timers will be "white elephants."

Oh it was? Heh haven't been reading much news lately. But in any case, don't you think it's a rather daft excuse for them not to install it? They can spend so much time, money and effort to clamp down on speeding but can't afford to solve a simple problem? I don't think it's any safer for motorists to be constantly watching their dashboard and looking out for every overhead bridge.

Exactly. Hence, a good reason for them to increase the fine to a hefty sum. Since after plenty of warning, you'd still want to take your chances, you pay the price.
