What materials would you choose for the bumper of your passenger car? What are the criteria that you must consider?
Well i know people will start telling me plastic metal etc.
However what i need is more of the type of metal or plastic... eg polyethylene etc...
Hope someone kind enuff can help me with this question. -

Oh oh the qn is asking if an engineer is suppose to decide on the material for the car bumper... what should he use. -

ABS is a versatile polymer because it eliminates most of the disadvantages found in the more common plastics like PS, PC, PU, PE.
Only disadvantage is ABS is considerably more expensive but prices have been falling but i guess its rising again.
The factors you need to consider for a bumper,
1) High impact resistant
2) non-deteoration
3) easily mouldability
4) heat resistant
5) strong
however you should consider that the bumpers are just a shell, most cars will have a PS block under it to absorb impact when collided. -
so anyone got any url i can refer to for details abt this ABS thingy...

I know PE is polyethylene. PS is polystyrene... how abt the rest of the "P"s?

Last time in the US, manfacturers made bumpers so flimsy till small knock = structural damage. US govt then mandated 5mph bumpers for cars. But MPV not consider car then, so MPV then got tiny bumpers. Touch backside means rear door also need to change.
I believe in Europe now, manufacturers try to standardise to a few types of plastic for simpler recycling. Thus, the material chosen may not be best for bumpers per se. -
How about steel bumpers, anyone? Go for a retro look.

when i buy the car, i choose the car itself, and the bumper comes with it... i didn't have much choice on what bumper material is made from.. unless i can built my own car..

dont forget damage to unprotected pedestrains on impact. its not just about the occupants in the car n protecting the car.
