Engineering materials is one thing, biz strategy is another. It's common practice in all industries not to make things last forever, so that the lucrative spare parts industry got future biz.
Last time in the US, manfacturers made bumpers so flimsy till small knock = structural damage. US govt then mandated 5mph bumpers for cars. But MPV not consider car then, so MPV then got tiny bumpers. Touch backside means rear door also need to change.
I believe in Europe now, manufacturers try to standardise to a few types of plastic for simpler recycling. Thus, the material chosen may not be best for bumpers per se.
