The project aims to produce five rally cars a month at the Singapore Subaru Hub facility which opened Thursday.
"Singapore has never taken precedence in the car manufacturing industry and we would like to change this," said Glenn Tan, chief executive of Motor Image, the sole distributor of Subaru cars in Singapore. A wholly-owned subsidiary of Hong Kong-listed Tan Chong International Ltd, it also manages Subaru distributorships elsewhere in Asia.
A Subaru statement said plans call for production to rise from the initial five per month target to as many as 15 cars "in the near future."
"Motor image plans to build these cars in Singapore, and export them to neighbouring ASEAN countries, under the AFTA tariff scheme," it said, referring to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and its Free Trade Area.
The cars manufactured will be Group N vehicles, production vehicles outfitted with safety equipment in compliance with Federation International de l'Automobile standards, Subaru said.
Subaru Hub, where the cars are to be made, is a US$15.4 million integrated facility for the sale, servicing and parts supply of Subaru vehicles.
Motor Image will build the Group N rally cars at the Hub with Prodrive UK, the company behind the Subaru Rally Team.
Subaru vehicles are made by Japan's Fuji Heavy Industries, in which Japanese auto giant Toyota Motor became the top shareholder last year. - AFP/de
