compare for the same car, the difference in performance figures between the hardtop and softtop.
u go check it up. 360 and 360 spyder, DB9 coupe and convertible etc.
Chopping a top off means a loss of chassis rigidity. Chassis rigidity refers to how much the chassis flexes. You can have the best suspension system in the world, but if your car chassis flexes like a slinky u might as well be driving swiss cheese down the alps.
That rigidity can be regained with thicker welds and reinforcement at other points in the chassis, but that means an increase in weight, easily up to 200+kg more over the coupe model. Add the need for a mechanism to raise the soft top and the weight it adds, and it becomes clear why soft tops GENERALLY fare slightly worse than their equivalent model coupes.
Additionally, having a soft top means top speed is restricted as the existance of a seam increases air friction, which becomes more notable at higher speeds. Then the added question of having to make a soft top mechanism which can withstand the lift at extremely high speeds, u have car manufacturers choosing to limit the car to a slightly lower top speed anyway, just so the soft top doesn't tear away while blasting along the autobahn. -

comparing a hardtop to soft top,
soft tops have less complicated mechanisms, hence easier to manufacture, easier to maintain and less likely to malfunction.
but for soft tops, there have been cases where vandals have used lighted cigarettes to burn a hole in it. Once thats done, u have to replace the entire canvas, which is not cheap. anyone with a penknife or cigarette or lighter can easily cost u more money than they can against someone with a hardtop.
hardtop mechanisms, besides being more complex, are also heavier, but surprisingly, the way they fold out of the way is quite innovative, so that the loss of boot space between soft tops and hard tops is quite negligible.
windnoise in a soft top is louder, and because a soft top creates more friction against the airflow, AND is more likely to get ripped off by wind lift, its top speed should be affected more, disregarding the differences in power and weight. -

and how stiff is the damned CF monocoque chassis? throw in a superlative TC system, mental 20,000 rpm engine, 750+ bhp, 600kg, hardcore drivetrain, 51st centuary aerodynamics etc, and u get a jet fighter for the road. -

while softtop can be pretty small
