Pump price down but petrol isn't cheaperI REFER to the article 'You need to be maths whizz to figure out petrol discounts' (ST, Oct 31).
I am a holder of the 'SPC&U' card and have been topping up at SPC stations in the last few years.
I felt a little disgusted when I sat down to calculate the actual price of petrol after the recent lowering of pump prices.
When the pump price was $1.724 per litre for RON 95 petrol, the effective price was $1.361 per litre with a 21 per cent discount.
However, after the pump price was lowered to $1.614 per litre recently, I found myself paying an effective price of $1.42 per litre due to a lowering of the discount rate to 12 per cent.
Let me illustrate the point using actual figures.
When the pump price was $1.724 per litre, I paid $64.50 for 47.35 litres of petrol after a 21 per cent discount on Oct 26.
A week later on Nov 2, I paid $67.81 for 47.74 litres of petrol after a 12 per cent discount at a lowered pump price of $1.614 per litre.
I was paying about $3 more for almost the same amount of the same petrol after the pump price was lowered by 11 cents.
What's all this? I wonder whether the Consumers' Association of Singapore and the relevant authorities can step in to bring about transparency in pump prices.
I would also like to take this opportunity to invite 'loyal' customers of other petrol companies to share with readers their experiences.
