it shld be VTEC...not V-tech...I'll leave that to the honda gurus to explain thisOriginally posted by lexibabe:can some one explain to me in simple terms the difference between a BMW engine, a V6 engine, a V- tech engine and V8 engine?
btw, what the difference from a S engine? i read something abt that in a car mag.. cant remember off hand what is was but i think its was a S6 engine or something like that. how does its affect the performance?Originally posted by AE86tofu:it shld be VTEC...not V-tech...I'll leave that to the honda gurus to explain this![]()
V6 and V8 the diff between them is just 2 more cylinders....Vee engines are such that their cylidners are arranged in a "V" shape
BMW engines are not really that diff from an ordinary engine....depends on what u wanna compare with etc...only main diff is that for the in-line 6 is that the material used is magnesium instead of the conventional aluminum alloy...
BMW engine is basically... smooth and capable of high output power (give faceOriginally posted by lexibabe:can some one explain to me in simple terms the difference between a BMW engine, a V6 engine, a V- tech engine and V8 engine?

you mean a straight 6?Originally posted by lexibabe:btw, what the difference from a S engine? i read something abt that in a car mag.. cant remember off hand what is was but i think its was a S6 engine or something like that. how does its affect the performance?
yea manOriginally posted by tomsss:
i know tat in v engines, the cylinders are arranged in a v shape. but how does that give power to it? like how powerful it is? and why does BMW engines although they are not Vs but are more powerful than the normal? what do they use?Originally posted by tomsss:BMW engine is basically... smooth and capable of high output power (give face)
V6 engine looks like this:
the holes you see there? there's where the cylinders are. the 'V' denotes the way the cylinders are positioned (in this case, a 'V' shape), the '6' is how many cylinders.
V8, like what the smartest guy had mentioned, V6 + 2:
VTEC = Honda's answer to highpower in small engines without turbo/super-charger.
managed to find some webbies about this, you may wanna check it outOriginally posted by lexibabe:i know tat in v engines, the cylinders are arranged in a v shape. but how does that give power to it? like how powerful it is? and why does BMW engines although they are not Vs but are more powerful than the normal? what do they use?
inline? or flat?
i check out the sites b4. thanks alot. so now i know that BMW engines are also run by computers so that they will constantly adjust to what the performance is suppose to be at that moment.Originally posted by tomsss:managed to find some webbies about this, you may wanna check it out

taking 6 cylinders engines for examples...
To put it simply, straight-6s are capable of higher horsepower ie, 800-1000bhp GTRs and Supras. The pistons travel just up and down.... 3 up 3 down at the same time. imagine a hammer hitting a nail... the greatest effect is when hitting directly above it.
V6s has the advantage of higer torque and more cubical design; more compact than the long straight-6. Power-wise, why it doesnt develop as much horsepower as the S6 is cos the end stroke ends up at 2 places; the downstroke of one side of 3 cylinders goes to, say bottom left while the other ends at bottom right. the combustion energy is more spreaded out, unlike the S6 which is more towards a focal point, which is basically down straight. But it gives out more torque; each downstroke at is 2 location, from left and right... hope you get the idea
Both types have their pros and cons, so you cant really say which one is definately better.
Why BMW engines are more powerful is cos they have a complex electronic engine managment system, that continously makes adjustment to the cams and valves to give peak performance. The Mini One and Mini Cooper both uses the same identical engines, yet the One only produces 90bhp while the Cooper puts out 120bhp. The difference is the engine control unit, that controls how the engine runs. The One has a springy performance with better fuel economy while the Cooper has a more punchy feel.
VVTi = Toyota's version of VTEC.... but focuses more on fuel efficencyOriginally posted by lexibabe:i forgot. what abt the VVTI and the VTI?![]()
Some call it the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) or DME or whatever... which is like the "brain" of the car. Its not exactly like a PC with a CPU fan or stuff.... its usually just a box that contains a circuit board inside, that has processors and chips and whatever, its receives input signals from various components of the car and carries out programmed instructions to other components that are linked to.Originally posted by lexibabe:i check out the sites b4. thanks alot. so now i know that BMW engines are also run by computers so that they will constantly adjust to what the performance is suppose to be at that moment.
so that means that the computer is the CPU of the whole car?
hmm.. thats interesting.
fly into space and out of our solar systemOriginally posted by freakass:What can a car with 90,000 bhp do?![]()

thats coz he regularly strips a 6.75 litre engine..Originally posted by lexibabe:hmmm... okie
basically its jus that the unit controls everything for the car. thats cool. my favourite car
how come u know so much?
to be honest... no i haven't even touched it... cos it doesnt need to be touched! wahahahaha!!!!Originally posted by nOrmalbOi:thats coz he regularly strips a 6.75 litre engine..![]()

so i guess it doesn't blow a lot.. it better not too.. since it costs so damn muchOriginally posted by tomsss:to be honest... no i haven't even touched it... cos it doesnt need to be touched! wahahahaha!!!!![]()
