Police arrest boys who drove 300m; they face probe for possible vehicle theft
JOYRIDE: Two primary school pupils hopped into this unattended lorry in Bedok South Avenue 2 and drove it for 300m before stopping. Passers-by detained the boys until police arrived and arrested them. -- SHIN MIN
IN A dangerous game which could well have ended in tragedy, two 11-year-old boys took a lorry for a joyride on Wednesday.
No one was hurt, but the primary school pupils are being investigated for possible vehicle theft, a police spokesman said.
Witnesses said the lorry was left unattended at the side of Bedok South Avenue 2 near Bedok Green Primary School.
The driver had left the key in the ignition and the doors unlocked, reported Shin Min Daily News.
The boys, in school uniform, were walking by when they decided to hop into the truck.
They started the engine and took the lorry for a spin, driving about 300m from Bedok South Avenue 2 to New Upper Changi Road, past the Bedok Community Centre.
Passers-by shouted to the underage drivers to stop, and called the police.
The lorry finally came to a halt near a bus stop in New Upper Changi Road.
The two boys were then detained by members of the public until the police arrived and arrested them.
They are now out on bail.
Police said investigations are in progress.
In Singapore, anyone below 18 years old is not allowed to drive on the road.
In 1996, there were three fatal accidents involving drivers who did not have driver's licences, resulting in four deaths.
And in 2005, 791 people were caught for driving without licences, although the figures were not broken down into age groups. -

wow...our excellent education system has now churned out two pupils with never-say-die attitude. With their inquisitive mind and entrepreneur instinct, they sniffed adventure and were daring enough to venture into the unknown world of driving...
kudos kudos...isn't that what we have always been trying to achieve, to be venture out and try new things mah...the boys just did. -
11 years old know how to drive manual already. Takumi didn't start till he was 13.

Well, I'll agree that the kids deserve to be taught a lesson. They could have easily crashed into another vehicle or knocked a pedestrian down.
But at the same time, I have nothing but harsh words for the lorry driver who left the doors unlocked and left the key in the ignition. He's just begging for his vehicle to be stolen. -
Pulau Ubin alot of abandond vehicles.. sometimes up to class 5.
I see kids riding bikes, then climb up yo drive it. -

Did they really know how to drive manual? That's quite impossible to believe for an 11-year old kid.... Even if they have heard about and seen how to use the clutch, they couldnt possibly have the skills to find the biting point and bla bla bla.... I think most probably what they did was let go of the handbrake and the lorry just happened to be on a slight slope....

When i was in Thailand.Chiang Mai and Phukets boys around the offenders' age was already riding bikes..somemore with pillion rider.

When the boys reach 18, they can consider signing on in the army and become drivers. Then they can play with the rovers, 3-tonners, 5-tonners, Unimogs, etc etc... Haha...
