Are cars really necessarily for normal travel in Singapore?

to own a car in singapore even if it is a datsun. it is not easy.
To own a Nissan Sunny for example
you have to pay $24600 downpayment
then 7 years of $700
Not forgeting petrol
say you seldom drive.. 1 full tank a week
that means 200 of petrol a month
carpark of $75 a month
Road tax of 1500 a year
that makes abt $1100 for monthly expenses.
to support a car.. it takes abt monthly salary of 2.5 before one can support a car

It all depends on the person.
Well if u are the kind of person who travel alot for buisness purposes, u can't afford to take public transport every now and then. and if u would given a option of driving your car / take a public transport, what would u choose.
As for me i would choose to drive, cause i can go anywhere i want at anytime of the day. I can even drive to J.B is I want. There are advantages and disadvantages of having a car. There is nothing "FREE" in singapore. If u need gain something u have to loose something. So here u loose is the value for yr car after certain years of driving.
So what ppl think abt this issue!! -
Having a car in Singapore is a luxury. It is not a necessity..with the convenience of our transport system.
Having a car improve your image to your prospective client..relatives and friends. The type of car you drove..reflect your status and achievement. Sad to say..we are living in a real materialistic country.
Having a car has it's disadvantages too..like the road bully and hogging...lack of car park space..cost of maintaining the vehicle like servicing, inspection and occasional breakdown so forth.
When you consider buying one..think carefully before you put down your downpayment.Dakar miss out on the Insurance coverage, other car park charges and the ERP toll deduction from your cash card..and that will set you back by at least another $100/- per month.
In Singapore..you will still reach your destination on time and safely..irregardless of whether you are travelling on the public transport or in a private car. -

In social-class conscious Singapore, a car is a necessity if you:
1) Wish to impress the opposite sex;
2) Want others to acknowledge your social status;
3) Would like to get anywhere in a hurry;
4) Find it more convenient
or
5) Are a car enthusiast
There shouldn't really be a necessity to have a car since the public transport system here is claimed to be "World class". However, after having said that, I have to admit that as a car lover, I currently own four cars. They are for driving pleasure and convenience

So in accordance with what Goondu said,i think a car is not really necessary in Singapore,but is more of a status symbol and to impress chicks,so it would seem that singaporeans generally look higher to those who have cars and girls tend to choose guys with wheels,rite?))

I feel that as long as the person is someone you like, it doesn't matter whether we are travelling by bus, car or... and I am definitely not impressed with a guy just because he is driving. :p

I definitely do not need (or have the ability) to own one - I can catch a nap while Free 'Merz' Chauffeurs drive me to and fro work.

from an investment point of view, car is never an option, cos it always loses money...
from accounting point of view, u lose money not only on operating cost like petrol, insurance, road tax, u have to account for the depreciation (normally using the reducing balance method). after calculation, it is still cheaper to take taxi everyday!!!!
but convienent and satisfaction can be to calculated..... probably after adding those two, buying a car is worth afterall!!!! -
Having a car in Singapore is really expensive. Imagine you will have to fork close to 100K including COE for a 1.5 litre Proton car.
Whereas just across the causeway, one only need to fork out RM55000(S$25K) for a 1.6Litre Proton car.
Even a Honda, Daihatsu, Toyota and many other cars are far less cheaper. A E200 Mercedes in Singapore will cost at least S$300K. While in Malaysia is about RM200000(S$95K)and in Thailand is about Baht 2.0million (S$97K).
Aiyoh why Singapore cars so expensive. I dunno also. Even local transport like SBS, MRT and TIBS are getting more expensive. Imagine taking a bus ride from orchard to Changi will need to fork out $1.50 or more if you need to change bus. While in Malaysia you need to pay only about RM1.50(S$0.65) if you need to travel the same distance.
Wah Pian, even petrol money is rising over the past months. Now LTA is adding the ERP time from 5pm to 8pm. Wahkao. It is getting damn hard to live in Singapore.
If you just earn 2K to 3K, better stick to local transport. Think about having a HDB flat will kill you already. -
Frankly speaking its not cheap to take public transport nowsaday also, since the fare are abt to raise again ......
Anyway, having a car meant dun need to sqeeze n pack like a sardine in the bus or mrt early in the morning ..... guess both have their pros n cons.....
But of cos, i would still prefer having a car :p -
Bird..what to do. Singapore is just a small island. If car is cheap..every person start to buy one each...in no time the roads will become congested.

two of them are continental (1999 volvo s-80 and 1998 saab 9-5) and the other two are asian (Y2K Hyundai Accent and 1989 Toyota Corolla) I spend most of the time driving the Accent to and from work. My wife drives the 9-5 most of the time although she likes the S-80 more but claims that it's too big a car to manoeuvre around Singapore.
The Toyota is more or less a project car which I work on. I might sell it though since it's sitting there not working most of the time.

Well It differs from individual- If u can afford go ahead and get it. IF u can't "Sorry public transports - PLease" -
Car is a must for some people. Example:
People who working place far from home or work place transport inconvinent, need car to travel.
People who do sales, need to move around to meet customer.
People who need to do delivery. etc
