Singaporean and Thai motorists who enter Malaysia will be allowed to buy up to only 20 litres of petrol from Friday, a move to stop foreign- registered vehicles from enjoying the benefits of government subsidies on oil.
The onus for implementing the regulation will fall on petrol-kiosk operators. If they are found guilty of selling above the cap, they face a RM15,000 (S$6,870) fine, a jail term or both.
Unleaded petrol now costs RM1.20; leaded petrol sells at RM1.16 and diesel goes for 70.1 sen per litre. Despite the 10 sen increase across the board, fuel prices remain one of the lowest in the region.
