Honda Civic v Mazda 3 (2.0 litre)

Hi,
I'm trying to decide between buying a new Honda Civic sedan (1.8 litre) or the Mazda 3 (2.0 litre). I live in Australia, but the cars are basically the same as in Singapore.
Any tips as to which one to choose over the other? One (though not only) factor is which one do you think would impress girls more? -

in terms of fuel efficiecny the honda wins hands down... unlike the mazda.. worse still.. trying to be a volvo which it aint... then again i cant blame the companies for sharing their technical stuff to lower the costs...
more inviting and sophisticated interior of the honda as compared to the mazda in my opinion...
transmission... honda civic's 5 speed vs mazda 3's 4 speed... equates to better spaced gear ratios and higher gear ratio when u cruise.... -
Is the Civic 2.0 available in OZ? If so, why not get that?

My father drives a Singapore Mazda ... it has broken down on the road 5 times already ... even though he bought it new ..... it literally died on the road .... it was the timing belt a couple of times ... I can't remember what were the other ones ... whatever the case my confidence in Mazda cars has been badly shaken ....
I drive a north american civic myself ... it's extremely fuel efficient, has good steering ... the only complaint is that the ride is a bit stiffer than most other cars ... I test drove the new civic, and it's a pretty awesome car ... the dash is very futuristic, but digital dashes will give you a lot of pain if it goes kaput ... the wheels has been moved forward in the body, so it's even more responsive than it was .... compared to the mazda 3, it's almost like a class apart ... but that's just me ... -
I would get the mazda 3. It has slighly more power (108kw) and more torque than the honda civic. In my opinion the civic's side profile looks a little strange. Have you though about the mazde 3 MPS? - It's a relative bargain at 40K.

*Looks: Like comparing chalk and cheese. The Civic has an elegant, refined look. The Mazda 3 (especially with the spoiler, etc) has a sporty, sexy look.
*Civic is a newer model: true, can't dispute this. This might impact on resale value in the future. In 3 years, a 2007 Civic will still be "current model" or similar, whereas the Mazda 3 will be a "has been".
*Interior: matter of taste, some like the Civic's interior, some don't.
Let me make some other points:
*Subjective driving : many people say that the Mazda is much more of a driver's car than the Civic. I have test driven them both (though the Mazda I test drove was a 2.3, not the 2.0 one) and can confirm that handling, brakes, steering are better on the Mazda. It's much more fun to drive.
*In Australia, the Mazda 3 is Japanese made and the Civic is Thailand made. This may or may not impact on build quality. -

mazda 3 wins hands down to me no matter what you all say. -
My cousin has a mazda 3 2.0L and I've noticed that the cabin can get quite loud at times. I haven't driven a civic but I'm guessing it would be quieter. That being said, both cars are pretty good for what they are. If you really want to pull chicks buy an Impreza WRX

Unless I'm wrong, because one of my friends is a honda mechanic, the new civic has ABS, EDB as well as their VSA, whereas i think the mazda only has ABS and EDB.

VSA isn't really that important in a small engined front wheel drive.

as u have said.. subjective driving.... so u might have been lulled into that feeling that the mazda is a better ride by the peeps around you...
what i feel is that civic has deep roots and tradition... it has always been known as the boy racer car... so it cant be inferior in any departments compared to mazda...
ultimately u r the one buying the car.... do whatever pleases u most.... -

2.3litre turbocharged engine... but power and torque directed to two front wheels...
powerful engine mounted to a ridiculous drive train results in even more absurd handling...
what u will get is massive wheel spin at launch and humongous understeering at the corners... -

As a daily driver the MPS is ok. No one really drives it as a sport car all the time. And at $40,000 it is also a performance bargain. A BMW 130i would be better but it costs double the price. -

It can still do the 1/4mile in 14.3 seconds. Nothing else in this price range is as fast in a straight line.
