Right-hand drive was born out of common sense.Originally posted by Ferguson:why no standardised
It's more difficult, since the driver's view is further away from the centre of the road, but not impossible. Sensible driving helps.Originally posted by storm_freaky13:do you guys think that LHD vehicles can navigate safely in a RHD rule region?

In ancient times, when you walked past someone, you would want him to be on your right. This is so that if he's unfriendly, you can easily pull out your sword (on your left) and fight him.
When horses for transportation were introduced, most riders would put his left foot on the stirrup and swing right leg over to the other side. This was also because of the sword which was on the left side of the body.
When the small carriages were introduced, they would travel on the left hand side. This is to prevent the driver from accidentally hitting pedestrians on his right while he's whipping the horses.
It was the French who introduced left-hand drive. If I'm not wrong, it was because of Napoleon choosing to start battles from the left (or something to that effect).
The Americans chose left-hand drive as well. They used far bigger carriages than the English which require the driver the sit on the horse on the left hand side for greater control.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

that's interesting. you mean owners of Benz and BMWs in Japan drive on the left?Originally posted by storm_freaky13:former commonwealth states follow the british system.
The most unique is Japan.
Similarly to the swords on the left when carried by a samurai, it was considered a mark of respect to put the sword away from the person riding in the opposite direction. hence keep left.
When the US took control of certain areas of japan, they switched to left hand drive. when the US left, they reverted back to RHD.
Right now in Japan, locally made cars are sold in RHD, whereas imported brands such as mercedes benzes,BMWs are sold in LHD as a mark of prestige.

Yes. in other words japan is right AND left hand drive but all cars keep to the left.Originally posted by nyox:that's interesting. you mean owners of Benz and BMWs in Japan drive on the left?
Luckily Singapore standardise it to all right hand side steering wheel, arbo everyday increase of langa cases...Originally posted by Vigelic:Yes. in other words japan is right AND left hand drive but all cars keep to the left.
their toll booths (like our "insert cashcard" machines) are like 5 lanes booth (machine) on the right side of the car for rhd cars and the left most lane (or 2 lanes) the booth (or machine) is on the left for LHD cars.. referring to the tollbooths on japan expressways
confusing right?
yes. i saw that. but like only 10% or less of cars are LHD, really mark of prestige.Originally posted by storm_freaky13:The most unique is Japan.
