Lamborghini launches lightened version of Gallardo

SINGAPORE: Italian car maker Lamborghini has just launched its newest model - the Gallardo Superleggera.
The Superleggera which means Superlight, is 100kg lighter than the regular Gallardo.
This latest car, revealed on Thursday at a launch in Singapore, boasts 530 horsepower and is made mostly of lightweight carbon-fibre parts.
And this allows the driver to reach high speeds in a shorter time, while using less fuel.
The cost? A cool S$918,000, inclusive of COE.
In the super-car ladder, the Superleggera is said to be close to the Murcielago flagship.

Superleggera, also called tube-frame, is an automobile construction technology used in classic sports cars in the middle of the 20th Century. The name means "super light" in Italian, and was coined in 1937 by the Italian coachbuilder, Carrozzeria Touring. Unlike the monocoque and body-on-frame methods widely adopted by the 1950s, superleggera cars use a network of thin metal tubes as a full-body frame. These are then covered with metal body panels, often made of exotic lightweight materials like aluminium or magnesium alloys. This construction technique is no longer used in production cars today, but is still found in low-volume and hand-built sports models.

Our mates across the pond at PistonHeads say they've got it on good authority that Lamborghini is indeed producing a Superleggera version of the too-hot-to-handle Murcielago.
Eyebrows were raised when spy photogs snapped a Murcielago test mule running test laps around the Nurburgring's venerable Nordschleiff in Germany, sporting a big ol' wing on the back and what looks like carbon fiber body panels. If the reports are correct – and we hope they are – the Murcielago Superleggera will get the same treatment as its little brother, the Gallardo Superleggera, which was unveiled at the Geneva show. That means carbon fiber and composite components will help bring the weight down, while some tweaks to the engine will bring power up, resulting in a delicious increase to the supercar's power-to-weight ratio. It's too early to tell how much extra juice the stripped-down Lambo will get, but it should be a daunting task considering that the engine's output was already augmented for the LP640. Could we be seeing a 700 horsepower figure?
The report suggests an official unveiling of the Murcielago Superleggera in March 2008, but with Lamborghini's pledge to have a new attraction at every major auto show, we wouldn't be surprised – delighted, mind you, but not surprised – to see it take its first bow earlier than that.

Weird, Murcielago Roadster has already been around for a while. The next one up is probably the Murcielago Superleggera. The one that Vigelic put up the link to on Autoblog. The arrival of the GS is pretty fast already, considering the car was unveiled only in late Februaru.

hmm i can only suggest that you read up / research a bit more.. the LP640 is out already but that has nothing to do with the superleggera. two different versions altogether. likewise the gallardo superleggera and the murcié superleggera are also two separate versions..

spy shots and rumours about it's coming started at end of 2005.. it only debuted as a concept car in the beginning of 2006 at a motorshow, then it was shown again in another motorshow in december 2006, people could only place orders for the car in december 2006 as well. production just started (spring 2007).. and so, yes, the car has NOT been officially launched in singapore and so that statement is valid lor =)
also, some online reports indicate that the murcie LP640 roadster will completely replace the murcie roadster.. so i guess maybe thats why lambo singapore sae "murcie roadster" instead of "murcie lp640 roadster".. of cos, we wont know for sure until the launch la.. -
