  shifted 5th gear to reverse gear?
  
  eg. u were driving n maybe wasn't alert...u r actually at 5th gear, but u thought u were on 3rd gear. so u want to up gear, to 4th gear. so u shift the gear stick down into 4th gear or so u thought.
  
  but in actual fact u had shifted 5th gear down to Reverse gear!
  
  or perhaps u were on 5th gear, then u wanted to down to 4th gear. then when u shift the gear stick u didnt shift properly, then instead of going into 4th gear, it goes into R gear.
  
  so what will happen? will the car suddenly reverse? or will engine stall?
  
  any of u guys ever kenna this before? then kenna accident or anything?

  there will be much grinding of gears...
  
  and, most cars have a catch which will not allow you to do that...
  
  and if you do not know you are at 5th and try to find the 6th which isn't there... ahahahah

  dun say 5th gear, when u try to park change 1st to Reverse, if ur wheels no complete stop ur gearbox sure KPKB if u try to engage Reverse.

  When the reverse gear is opposite a forward gear,
  You can't just accidentally shift to into reverse gear.
  You need to press down the gear stick.

  i believe TS is talking about those typical 5-speed gearbox, where the reverse gear is just below 5th gear; you pull the knob all the way to the right and down.
  
  Anyway, you won't be able get into reverse gear while travelling at forward speed. You'll probably hear some heart-renching grinding sound, but you just can't get the gear into reverse.

  not exactly true though,
  i have the experience that i fast fast change the gear between 1 and reverse to park, still can got into reverse gear while still moving

  that's because your rpm is low and the clutch pedal is depressed
  
  to ts, if you managed to force it into reverse, after much grinding from the dog teeth, and let go of the clutch, u can expect some serious sh|it.

  if it so happened that you successfully did that, the engine would stall. and you most probably need a need gear...

  It is almost impossible to shift to REVERSE when you are cruising along the highway. Just for your info, the reverse gear and the 5 forward gears are not synchronised and this is done for a good reason too.
  
  If you have access to a manual gear car, you can try this, shift to REVERSE(when the car is stationery) and try to move the lever to 5th, you will notice this can be done very easily. But you will also notice you cannot shift back to REVERSE when the stick is in 5th (not synchronised). You will have to shift the lever to NEUTRAL and then you will be able to shift back to REVERSE.
  
  Also if the car is moving/crawling(5km/hr) along and you try to shift to REVERSE, there would be a large grinding sound since the clutch plate is still spinning (I kena before when I was in the carpark). Most auto manufacturers recommend resting the lever for at least 3 seconds in NEUTRAL before you shift to REVERSE. So just imagine if you do this at 100km/hr in 5th, the sound would be enough to put you off for trying any stunts.

  maybe next time when he gets to secondary school, and maybe takes a course in physics, he will learn about momentum (sp? sorry slightly sleepy) and thus learn u cannot go for 80kph to in reverse in... oh 5secs?
